No doubt about it, I laughed a lot during Jim Abrahams’ “Mafia!” but even in the midst of my laughter, I was reminded of my stomach-churning experience last week when I saw “There’s Something About Mary.” It is the new film’s misfortune that it is released after, rather than before, the year’s most amusing comedy, The Hangover. I suppose it’s unfair to penalize “Mafia!” for its release date, but how can I ignore it when it’s so timely? The film, which is titled “Jane Austen’s Mafia!” on the screen but not in the advertisements, is another in Abrahams’ series of gag-a-minute parodies, which includes “Airplane!,” “Top Secret!,” and the “Naked Gun!” movies, among others. A parody of Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” and “The Godfather, Part II” and Martin Scorsese’s “Casino,” with hints of “The Postman (Il Postino)” thrown in for good measure. The best shot in the film is the opening sequence, in which Anthony Cortino (Jay Mohr), a mob enforcer in a Las Vegas casino, turns the ignition key on his Cadillac and is blown sky-high. Robert De Niro rotated dreamily against a backdrop of flames in the Scorsese film; here, the actor catches a Frisbee in his mouth, makes a basket, and watches the “Twister” cow drift by.
narrated by Mohr’s character, tells the story of his father’s childhood in Sicily (“Godfather II”) and his subsequent rise through the mob. Jason Fuchs portrays a young Vincenzo Cortino, who grows up in the town of Salmonella (“Home of Warm Mayonnaise”) and is the protagonist of the film. Upon his arrival in America, the Ellis Island guards attempt to name him “Armani Windbreaker” after his jacket, and by the time he achieves godfather status, he is played by the late Lloyd Bridges, who has a good time mocking Marlon Brando’s famous tomatoes-and-death scene from the classic film The Godfather.

Joey (Billy Burke), the don’s older son, is a hothead with a short fuse, and power in the family eventually passes to Anthony (based on the Al Pacino character), who becomes the family patriarch. An understanding of the earlier films is advantageous, but who isn’t familiar with the “Godfather” films? And who doesn’t laugh when the Diane Keaton character (played by Christina Applegate) laments, “I’m always going to just be that Protestant chick who never killed anyone?” Cortino owns and operates a casino in Las Vegas, where he offers games such as Go Fish and Snakes and Ladders. Guess the Number is one of my favorites. “Two?” a gambler inquires. “I’m sorry,” the dealer says. “Three came to mind right away.” Whenever cheats are caught signaling to one another, a tough enforcer with a cattle prod approaches the wrong man, zaps him, and then zaps everyone else in the vicinity. Pamela Gidley plays Pepper Gianini, a dancer who is based on Sharon Stone’s character from the film “Casino.” Anthony’s life in Vegas becomes complicated when he falls in love with her. Most of it made me smile – including Cortino’s tip for the casino doorman (“Keep the car”) – and I was wondering if the projectile vomiting was an homage to “National Lampoon’s Animal House” or just a lift by the time it got to the projectile vomiting. “Mafia!” is the type of film that can never completely fail, but can succeed to varying degrees in different ways. It doesn’t hold a candle to Abraham’s previous efforts.
