Mary Daisy Dinkle, age 8, (Bethany Whitmore) leads a lonely existence in Mount Waverley, Victoria, Australia, in 1976. She endures bullying at school from her peers because of an unfortunate birthmark on her brow. She receives little help from her alcoholic, kleptomaniac mother Vera and her distant father Noel at home. Her only solace comes from her pet rooster, Ethel, her love of sweetened condensed milk, and an animated series called The Noblets that is similar to the Smurfs. One day, while visiting the post office with her mother, Mary notices a New York City phone book and chooses to write to an American because she is interested in their culture. She picks Max Jerry Horowitz’s name at random from the phone directory, writes him a letter introducing herself, and sends it off in the hopes that he will become her pen pal. Max Jerry Horowitz, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, is a 44-year-old morbidly obese Jewish atheist who struggles to establish strong relationships with others due to a variety of mental and social issues. He initially has a panic attack when he receives Mary’s letter, but he decides to respond, and the two soon become friends. (partly due to their shared love of chocolate and The Noblets). When Vera gets Max’s first letter, she doesn’t like him, so Mary advises him to write to her agoraphobic neighbor, Len Hislop, whose mail she regularly collects. Later, when Mary inquires about love, Max has a serious anxiety attack and must spend the next eight months in an institution. He is reluctant to write to Mary again for a while after being freed. He wins the New York Lottery on his 48th birthday and spends the money on a lifelong supply of chocolate and an extensive collection of Noblet figurines. The rest he gives to his senior neighbor Ivy, who spends most of it on herself before getting into a mishap with a broken jet pack and passing away. Mary becomes discouraged in the meantime, believing Max has left her.

On the advice of his therapist, Max eventually responds to Mary in writing and explains that he has been identified as having Asperger syndrome. Mary is overjoyed to hear from him once more, and the two keep in touch for the ensuing years. A note from Damien notifying her that he has left her for his own pen-friend, Desmond, a sheep farmer in New Zealand, can be found one day when she checks the mail every day hoping to receive an answer.

In the meantime, Max comes to the realization that Mary is a flawed person, like himself, and sends her a box containing his Noblet figurine collection as a gesture of forgiveness following an incident in which he nearly chokes a homeless man (Ian “Molly” Meldrum) in retaliation for throwing away a used cigarette. But following Damien’s exit, Mary has given up and is unable to locate the box for a number of days. Mary makes the decision to kill herself after discovering some Valium that had belonged to her mother. She is not conscious that she is carrying Damien’s child. Len knocks on her door to inform her of Max’s package as she takes the Valium and is on the brink of hanging herself. He did this after overcoming his agoraphobia. She discovers the Noblet figurines inside along with a note from Max in which he apologizes and acknowledges his realization that they are not perfect.
