Patrick Stewart is an actor of effortless class and presence, and “Masterminds” is like an obstacle course he has to run. Stewart is best known for his work on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Is it possible for him to sit through this terrible movie without succumbing to the same level of stupidity as the characters on the screen? Or will he crumble under the weight of the material? The answer to that question is the only thing that keeps you on the edge of your seat and almost the only thing that keeps you interested in one of the worst movies of the year.

The young man known as Ozzie, played by Vincent Kartheiser, is a notorious computer hacker who was kicked out of the prestigious Shady Glen School permanently. His father has made it clear that he intends to enroll him in a military school. Motion detectors have been installed in Ozzie’s bedroom, where he spends his days while away while downloading illegal software.

He brings his younger sister Melissa, who is played by Katie Stuart, to the school, which is walled off and guarded in the same manner as the CIA, and he uses his charm to get past the security guard. Inside, he is confronted by the overbearing principal, played by Brenda Fricker, as well as the menacing Rafe Bentley, played by Stewart, who is the school’s newly hired chief of security. Rafe Bentley was brought on staff primarily because of Ozzie’s recent misdeeds. Stewart’s character is a new hire.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Masterminds quiz.

It turns out that Bentley intends to kidnap 10 of the children, whose parents are among the wealthiest people in the United States, which allows us to condense a story that is otherwise lengthy but uninteresting but no less superficial. During the time that he is trapped inside the school due to the hostage situation, Ozzie uses his skills as a hacker and a troublemaker to fight against the malicious plot.

You do not need to know anything further than that because, in your head, you are already conjuring up images of abandoned boiler rooms, air shafts, hacked computers, obscure electrical connections, and ways to take control of the school’s public address system. My mind has a hard time keeping all of the details straight. I lost all interest. After a while of taking notes on my Palm Pilot, I decided to switch over to the miniature chess game instead.

Since we have all seen this movie multiple times (all of the pieces have been assembled from better films, but then there are few worse films to borrow from), the only thing that keeps us interested in it now is Stewart’s appearance in it. He is trim, precise, and wise beyond his years. He makes a convincing squint with his eyes. A case of mass hallucination occurred in which the screenplay appeared to be for another film. He is a good actor, and there is no doubt that he signed up for this movie for the same reason as everyone else involved: a case of mass hallucination.

About the quiz

Does Stewart emerge unsullied? A very close call. That is something I will give him credit for. Up until the very last few minutes of the movie, he maintains a level of poise and dignity throughout the entire thing. But after that (do not read any further if you plan on watching this movie), he is put in a situation that, in my opinion, no actor could make it through alive. Not De Niro. Not Olivier. He is forced to kidnap little Melissa and then engage in a high-speed chase with Ozzie through a sewer system while driving modified dune buggies. All of this takes place while he is held captive.

If you make it to the, “Masterminds, under no circumstances should you leave the event early. You are required to remain in order to get a good look at the expression that Stewart is making as he fights with the little hostage who is attempting to jump off of his dune buggy. I am unable to decipher what people are thinking or saying, but I get the impression that whatever he is saying, even if it is just an internal monologue, is something like this: “I want to be beamed out of this place as soon as possible!
