The original Matilda novel by British children’s author Roald Dahl, illustrated by Quentin Blake, was published in 1988. It is the story of a young, intelligent girl who discovers a passion of reading despite having abusive parents and a headmistress at her school who incorporates rebellion and magical abilities. The book was turned into a 1996 American movie starring Danny DeVito, an audiobook read by Kate Winslet, and a BBC Radio 4 show with Lenny Henry as the narrator. The Royal Shakespeare Company revealed its plans to perform a musical adaptation in December 2009, directed by Matthew Warchus and with an original script written by Dennis Kelly. After seeing his 2009 tour Ready for This? and being convinced during the encore song “White Wine in the Sun,” musician and comedian Tim Minchin was selected to compose the music and lyrics for the song.
