Metropolis (o) is a Greek word derived from mtr, which means “mother,” and pólis, which means “city” or “town,” which is how the Greek colonies of antiquity referred to their original cities, with whom they maintained cultic and political-cultural links. In post-classical Latin, the term referred to the capital city of a province, the center of government, and, more specifically, the seat or see of a metropolitan bishop, to whom suffragan bishops reported.[5] In this context, the province is synonymous with the diocese or bishop see.[6] It is the “mother city” of a colony in a colonial setting, that is, the city that sent out settlers. The term has distant origins in Ancient Greek colonial history, with its first use in Middle English around the 14th century.[7] This was subsequently generalized to any big, important city in a country, or any city regarded as a center of a specific activity.[Citation required]
