In his films, Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi crafts engrossing, nagging moral tales without ever resorting to overt moralizing or preaching. Eric Rohmer did the same thing, but he chose to set his subtle parables in the realms of romance and sex instead. It was even more concerned with situational ethics than erotic entanglements in Farhadi’s 2011 marriage drama, “A Separation.” In contrast to his previous film, “Everybody Knows,” which starred Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz and was shot in Spain, where, among other things, debtor’s prison is still a thing, his new film, “A Hero,” takes place and is shot in his home country of Brazil.

Editor’s Picks

That’s the location from which Rahim, the film’s ultimately ironic title character, flees at the beginning of the film. He is not evading capture; rather, he is on administrative leave. (This film has already received negative feedback on the internet for portraying the debtor’s prison as being overly comfortable.) Not only is he on administrative leave, but he also has a strategy for winning his release. Amir Jadidi, who portrays the character, has a winning smile on his face. Hangdog mode, which is something that those who are critical of his manipulative personality point out to him, makes him look a lot like Jake Johnson, but with his hair and beard cut shorter. In any case, he possesses an energizing quality that may compel a rooting interest. Also, you will find out which character are you in this MHA Heroes Rising quiz.

As for his strategy, we only get a glimpse of it in dribs and drabs, but the fulcrum of it is a misplaced handbag containing a nice packet of gold coins. It is a sinking feeling that Rahim and his devoted girlfriend Farkhondeh (Sahar Goldust) experience when they take the coins to be appraised. The payoff will be significantly less than what he owes to Bahram (Mohsen Tanabandeh), who is also looking for a solid guarantee as to what will happen to the remainder of the money. Rahim has been frantically contacting relatives and in-laws in order to obtain some assurances in this regard. The viewer is left wondering whether what happens next is the result of a genuine crisis of conscience or a sense of defeat due to the overwhelming evidence that the plan is doomed to failure. Rahim, on the other hand, decides to return the handbag rather than cash in the contents of it. Also, you must try to play this MHA Heroes Rising quiz.

About the quiz

The story of a good deed that goes unpunished begins here, with the viewer’s uncertainty as to how good the done deed was in the first place serving to add to the novelty of this tale. Following Rahim’s arrest, the opportunistic warden of his prison learns of his actions and contacts the media in order to sell a “human interest story.” A local council and its associated charity take an interest, and a sort of circus ensues, exhilarating Rahim—and entangling the obstinate Bahram—in the process. Seeing Tanabandeh with his arms crossed so tightly that you couldn’t separate them with a crowbar while his character watches a public lovefest for Rahim is some of the most impressive physical acting you’ll see all year, and it’s one of the most memorable scenes in the film. It seems that the more people look into Rahim’s story, the more holes they uncover. And the tangled web that at times almost seems to weave itself (despite the fact that Rahim is responsible for every single bad decision that could possibly be made) threatens to break the spirit of Rahim’s young son, whose difficulties in communicating make him a kind of catnip for those who want to create a heartstring-pulling media narrative about him.

Farhadi shoots and cuts his story with his usual deftness and dexterity, never making a mistake with his camera placement or stage design. Having said that, his script is far from being as seamless as he would like it to be. When I watched the film, I had the distinct impression that Farhadi had written the story’s various bad outcomes for Rahim first, then retconned the traps that Rahim almost always falls into, in order to reach the not-quite-resolution that has become a hallmark of Farhadi’s work. Although “A Hero” is a chilling demonstration of how money changes everything, it is also a compelling arraignment of the systems that ultimately govern human interaction, regardless of the superficial differences between Europe, the Americas, and Asia, as the song states.

The film will be released in theaters on January 7th and will be available for streaming on Amazon on January 21st.
