The first episode of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” was an accident. Although it was a charming and warmhearted fluke, it was still a fluke. A wide range of moviegoers responded to it despite its cultural specificity, and it grossed an incredible $369 million worldwide in 2002 despite its broad appeal and sitcom-like quality.
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” is the follow-up to the film that no one seemed to want, and it has a title that is just as uninspired as the premise itself: “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.” Yes, there will be another big, fat, Greek wedding in the near future.
However, whereas Nia Vardalos’ massive likability carried the first film, the sequel (which she also co-wrote) makes the mistake of relegating her to a supporting role in one of way too many intertwined subplots, none of which are particularly compelling.
This time, Toula, Vardalos’ sweetly self-deprecating character, must deal with the chaos that has been thrust upon her by a slew of members of her zany extended family. For example, in the most implausible of these predicaments, it turns out that Toula’s parents, Chicago restaurant proprietors Gus (Michael Constantine) and Maria (Lainie Kazan), are not, after all, married to each other. Their marriage certificate from 50 years ago was never signed by the priest back in Greece. This means that there will have to be another big, fat, Greek wedding, which you may have guessed.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 quiz.
But hold on a minute! The fact that Maria is constantly harping on every young woman she meets about the importance of getting married leads her to question whether she really wants to be someone’s wife any longer. Despite this, we already know from the title that the problem will be solved, so there are no real stakes involved.
The film also depicts the struggles Toula has in keeping the spark alive with her own husband, Ian (John Corbett, who is more milquetoast than ever), the WASP-y dude whose arrival in Toula’s life caused a cultural clash in the first movie. The prospect of her 17-year-old daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris), leaving home and attending college also makes her feel devastated. As she prepares for prom and tries to avoid the pressure to date a Greek boy, Paris is dealing with her own romantic angst. In the meantime,

Paris’ entire family shows up at her high school’s college fair in order to ensure that she stays in town and attends Northwestern, which is emblematic of the film’s over-the-top tone throughout, which is characteristic of director Kirk Jones’ overall style. They’ve brought homemade spanakopita with them. Their actions put pressure on the admissions representative. They exaggerate their grins for group photographs.

This is the level of hilarity that “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” maintains throughout the film—this is the shrill note that it hits over and over again. The fact that Toula’s family is (supposedly) lovably embarrassing isn’t enough to establish their lovability. Gags are piled on top of gags in a never-ending frenzy, resulting in overbearing rather than uproarious results. In every situation, you can count on each and every character to behave exactly the same way, and that way is almost always obnoxious. A character who comes out as gay, which in theory should be a watershed moment, appears out of nowhere and has no emotional resonance with the rest of the cast and crew. Finally, on occasion, John Stamos and Rita Wilson (who is once again a producer on the film) appear as husband and wife, ostensibly because they are Greek and they are carrying out their due diligence on the matter at hand.
Andrea Martin, who plays Toula’s thoroughly inappropriate Aunt Voula, is the one character we can rely on to shake things up with the sheer awesomeness of her bizarre presence. Martin has performed with the Second City before. She generates consistent laughter simply by altering her facial expressions and vocal intonation in different ways. And, man, does it feel good to laugh for those brief intervals of time.
About the quiz
Vardalos’ decisions, both on-screen and behind-the-scenes, aren’t always as straightforward. A character Vardalos created has been stripped of everything that made her endearing and transformed into a skittish, wound-up ball of codependency, despite the fact that she is normally endowed with a pleasing accessibility and a quick wit. When it comes to her selfish, needy family, Toula is a wife and a mother who more often than not behaves like a scared little girl, giving in to every whim and demand.
