When you imagine yourself eating a large bag of Skittles and then throwing it all up in a fit of sugar-induced nausea, you’ll have a good idea of what it’s like to sit through “My Little Pony: The Movie.”

The movie adaptation of the long-running television show “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” is unlikely to win over any new fans with its shrieky, garish, and incessantly perky style. It’s an animated film that’s really intended for the tiniest of little kids, who will almost certainly respond to it on a primal, visceral level when they see it. This is probably the best first movie-going experience for young viewers because it is completely harmless, despite the fact that it is horrendous.

Editor’s Picks

Besides evoking nostalgia for a certain generation of adults in the audience, “My Little Pony” also makes an absurd number of pop culture references, including a famous line from the film “Pretty Woman” and a shameless plug for yet another Hasbro property, the Hungry Hungry Hippos game, among others.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this My Little Pony The Movie quiz.

To be honest, this frothy confection isn’t exactly my cup of sparkling tea. In fact, I’m a little too old to remember playing with the toys when I was a kid, and now that I’m a mom, I have an eight-year-old son who is most definitely NOT a Brony. He came to a recent screening with me despite my encouragement that he keep an open mind going into the film, which is always our goal, despite my encouragement that he keep an open mind going into the film, which is always our goal. (“I’m sorry, kid,” I apologized.) “Not everything can be as dramatic as ‘Dunkirk.'”

We wouldn’t have known our Pinkie Pie from our Fluttershy if they had come up to us and bitten us on the buttocks—which they would never do, of course, because the pony pals are all about kindness and friendship in their interactions with us. We are not likely to return to the magical, rainbow-hued land of Equestria now that we have experienced it for a short period of time, however. It’s mind-numbing in its simplicity, and that’s saying something.

However, the filmmakers should be commended for staying true to the fundamental elements of the “Friendship is Magic” television show, which includes admirably retaining the voice actors who have brought these characters to life over the course of seven seasons on the small screen. Additionally, longtime director Jayson Thiessen and series writer Meghan McCarthy made the transition from television to the silver screen. (Rita Hsiao and Michael Vogel are both credited with screenwriting.)

About the quiz

Despite this consistency, “My Little Pony: The Movie” is simultaneously attempting to broaden its audience appeal by introducing new characters to the ponyverse and casting well-known actors to play them. In other words, while the film’s themes of trust and teamwork are fundamental, the narrative itself is disjointed and crowded with a slew of underdeveloped and awkwardly placed characters. Plus, every now and then, the various animals break into song, though it’s never anything particularly memorable. (While one peppy little ditty about being awesome was a toe-tapper, I’ll concede that it was a toe-tapper.)

In any case, here’s what it’s all about… When we first meet Twilight Sparkle (voiced by Tara Strong), she is busy organizing a large friendship festival for the rest of the group. Nevertheless, when a sinister force invades the land and kidnaps the reigning pony princesses in order to harness their power, Twilight Sparkle must embark on a journey with the help of her friends in order to save them and their home. Among them are the brightly colored Rainbow Dash and the country girl Applejack (both voiced by Ashleigh Ball); the unflappably upbeat Pinkie Pie and the sensitive, timid Fluttershy (both voiced by Andrea Libman); the vampy, glamorous Rarity (Tabitha St. Germain); and their wisecracking dragon sidekick, Spike (voiced by Ashleigh Ball) (Cathy Weseluck).

They’re attempting to outrun the villainous Tempest Shadow (voiced by Emily Blunt), a bitter unicorn with a broken horn who is carrying out the orders of the evil (but wacky) Storm King (voiced by James Corden) (Liev Schreiber). While on their journey, they come across a group of ex-pirates who are now forced to work as messengers (Zoe Saldana provides the voice of their leader), and they also come across a mother-daughter pair of seahorses who live in a secret underwater lair (voiced by Uzo Aduba and Kristin Chenoweth). Along with the ponies’ helper, there’s a cunning cat (Taye Diggs) who might or might not be trying to be helpful when he offers to assist them. At the end of the day, there’s… Sia. In all seriousness, it’s Sia as a horse, complete with wig and everything.

Understandable if you’re having trouble keeping up with the conversation here. As a result of watching the film, I’m still not entirely certain about everything that transpired. However, it’s possible that a film about the transformative power of friendship—even one as messy as this—isn’t the worst thing that could happen to the world right now.
