The film is set in 1980s Texas and tracks three intertwined storylines involving hitman Anton Chigurh, Sheriff Ed Tom Bell, and hunter Llewelen Moss. It begins with Bell’s soliloquy lamenting the passing of time and how things have become more violent than in his father’s day. The scene shifts to Chigurh, who has lately been arrested in a small town. While in custody, he strangles a deputy sheriff and kills a stranger on the highway with a penetrating, air-powered captive bolt pistol before fleeing in his vehicle. He saves the life of a gas station proprietor who correctly predicts Chigurh’s coin toss. Llewelyn Moss is out hunting pronghorns in the desert when he stumbles across the remains of a failed drug deal. He discovers several dead men and dogs, a wounded Mexican man pleading for water, drugs in the car, and a briefcase containing two million dollars. He accepts the money and goes home. Moss returns with water, feeling guilty, but discovers the man dead. Two guys in a truck chase him down, but he flees into a river. Back at home, he dispatches his wife, Carla Jean, to remain with her mother, and then takes a taxi to a Del Rio motel, where he hides the briefcase in the air duct of his room. Meanwhile, Bell and his deputy Wendell are looking into the deaths of the deputy who was strangled and the motorist who was murdered by Chigurh.
