“Ocean’s 8” is a giddy, fizzy escape that also makes a pointed statement about the realities of the world in which we live, which is a welcome relief in the midst of a bloated summer blockbuster season crammed with comic book superheroes. In the vein of Steven Soderbergh’s “Ocean’s” trilogy (Soderbergh serves as producer this time), it’s a high-stakes heist film that includes all of the elaborate machinations that have become synonymous with the series. Criminality is elevated to the level of fine art, which is appropriate given that the robbery occurs at The Met Gala, the annual fashion extravaganza held at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. It’s also the most unabashedly entertaining film that director and co-writer Gary Ross has made since his directorial debut, “Pleasantville,” was released 20 years ago today. Effortlessly paced and dripping with sultry glamour, “Ocean’s 8” moves with the swagger of an A-list supermodel strutting down the red carpet.
However, beneath the couture gowns and glittering jewels, the high-tech equipment and good, old-fashioned sleight of hand, “Ocean’s 8” is a film about the strength of women standing up for themselves, sticking together, and achieving the seemingly impossible. Year-round planning and an abundance of chutzpah undoubtedly contribute to their success, but the real reason these women are able to pull off this particularly daring crime in broad daylight is simple: “When a ‘him’ is present, people take notice. “When it comes to a ‘her,’ she gets ignored,” Sandra Bullock, who plays crew chief Debbie Ocean, says. “And for a change, we’d like to be forgotten.”
Bullock, who takes over as the George Clooney figure in this reimagining of the franchise, is coolly charismatic and completely in command in the title role. Bullock is totally in command in the title role. (Debbie is the estranged sister of Clooney’s late Danny Ocean, a fact that the film effectively addresses before moving on to the action.) Debbie returns to New York City immediately after giving the performance of a lifetime to persuade the parole board to release her from prison. She immediately begins putting together the team she’ll need to pull off the crime she’s been planning for the past five years, eight months, and twelve days, which she calls “the crime of a lifetime.”

In a film in which Awkwafina is a breath of fresh air and Carter is her delightfully odd self, Hathaway emerges as the most memorable character. It’s nothing short of inspired, well-controlled lunacy that she’s committing here. The fact that she is an actress who is playing an actress provides her with an excellent opportunity to ham it up. But it’s clear that Hathaway is having a great time discovering all of the different shades of this character’s personality, from preening egomania to dippy girlishness to insecure fragility. She’s pulled off a heist of her own in this location.

It’s impossible not to crack a grin at the sheer brazenness of the crime in “Ocean’s 8” because the film is so entertaining. In heist movies, as is always the case, the sustained thrill of the high-wire act comes from watching the players lay out their complex plan, then watching to see if the plan actually works out the way they’d hoped it would. Throughout the film, Ross and co-writer Olivia Milch give each of these women a chance to shine, but because they’ve amassed such a staggering roster of talent, you find yourself wishing that some of the supporting characters had been better fleshed out. As previously stated, this is especially true for Kaling, Paulson, and Awkwafina, and it is the film’s one significant flaw.

However, bringing back an established franchise like the “Ocean’s” movies—which were previously dominated by roguish men—and casting a murderer’s row of talented actresses in the lead roles makes a powerful statement. They also have the opportunity to express their feminine side thanks to the magnificent costume design of Sarah Edwards, who not only created their fashionable wardrobes but also collaborated with top designers such as Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Naeem Khan, and Zac Posen to create the stunning gowns the characters wear for the main event. Bullock’s Alberta Feretti dress in black and metallic is a total show-stopper, as is Blanchett’s emerald-green, beaded Givenchy jumpsuit, which she also wears.
