In no way am I surprised that my esteemed colleague Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune named John Carney’s “Once” as the year’s best film.
No movie was going to be able to knock “Juno” off the top of my must-see list, so I gave it my Special Jury Prize, which is sort of an equal first. In 17 days, “Once” was shot for next to nothing, doesn’t even identify its characters, is primarily composed of music with little dialog, and is magical from start to finish. When you’re watching one of these films, you’re holding your breath, hoping that it recognizes how good it is and doesn’t take a wrong turn.
It doesn’t work like that. The more you think about it, the more you realize that even the ending is the right ending.
The action of the film takes place in Dublin, where we witness a street musician performing for donations. This is the individual (Glen Hansard). He attracts the attention of the Girl’s audience (Marketa Irglova). She is a huge fan of his music. She is also a pianist in her own right. He is interested in hearing her perform. She does not have access to a piano. A display piano is used in their session, which she takes him to a music store where she knows the owner personally. She performs some Mendelssohn pieces. We are completely smitten with this film. He is falling head over heels in love with her. He just sits there and listens to what’s being said. She is falling head over heels in love with him. She just sits there and plays with her toys. As a result, there is an unusual pause before we see the obligatory reaction shot of the store owner, as if the movie wants nothing more than to sit back and listen in.

Part of the reason this is working is due to the deeply good natures we sense these two people possess. They aren’t “picking each other up,” as the saying goes. They aren’t flirting — or, technically, they are, but in the sense that “I’m not interested unless you’re too good to be true,” they aren’t interested.
They enjoy music, and they aren’t lying when they say they do. We are able to discern the true emotions of the two of them to a rare degree; there is no layer of technique, effect, or style to distract us.

Their story is developed primarily through the use of music in the film. In the interim, they share their experiences. His heart had been broken because his girlfriend had abandoned him and relocated to England. She brings him to her house so that he can meet her mother, who speaks little English, and to watch television with three of her neighbors, who come in every night to watch their show.
And then he meets her child, which comes as a complete surprise to everyone. Then he discovers that she is married. Another surprise, and we get the impression that he had already dumped the girl in London and was making romantic plans for the future in his mind. He’s wounded, but he’s a fighter. After that, he takes her home to meet his father, who works as a vacuum cleaner repairman. She has a Hoover that needs to be repaired. It’s the law of Kismet.

“Once” is exactly the type of film that I’ve been hounding about since I re-started my review career in 2011. People couldn’t quite put their finger on what it was, but they insisted that I had to see it. I felt compelled to do so. I, on the other hand, did. They were absolutely correct.
