On home video, a movie that had been killed has been revived. The 227-minute epic poem of violence and greed “Once Upon a Time in America” by Sergio Leone was shortened by 90 minutes for the U.S. theatrical release, turning it into an incomprehensible mess devoid of texture, timing, tone, or meaning. The first movie, which I saw at the Cannes Film Festival, was viewed by the rest of the globe. A tragic choice was taken in America. I penned the following when the complete version, which is now available on cassette, screened at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival: Is the movie too lengthy? No and yes. Yes, in the sense that we have to keep track of characters and relationships over the course of fifty years and that it takes real focus to understand Leone’s story construction, in which everything may or may not be an opium dream, a nightmare, a memory, or a flashback. No, in the sense that the audience did not rouse or become restless as the epic progressed and that the movie is compulsively and constantly watchable.
Editor’s Picks
The film follows the lives of four New York City gangsters for five decades. These childhood friends turned merciless criminals almost right away, but they share a unique connection of devotion with one another. When one of them betrays the other, or believes he does, he feels guilty for the rest of his life until he realizes that he was actually the one who was deceived. In Leone’s original version, the plot is presented through a convoluted sequence of dreams, memories, and flashbacks. The movie begins with two scenes of horrifying violence, then shifts to an opium den where a character played by Robert De Niro is attempting to flee the repercussions of his actions, before setting the tone with a scene of tremendous power: A man’s conscience is like a phone that never stops ringing after he contacted the police and betrayed his friends. The movie cuts back and forth through a patchwork of scenes that come together to form an emotional whole. Although there are times when we are unsure of precisely what is happening, we never lose faith in the film’s story. But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Once Upon A Time In America quiz. Although it is now accessible on cassette [and DVD], that version was not screened in American theaters. Instead, the entire framework for memories was scrapped. One phone call is heard. The changes were once poetic. The movie has been forced into an apparent chronological sequence, a small number of scenes have been cut, relationships are now incomprehensible, and the audience will likely spend a significant amount of time in total confusion. It is a bitter absurdity that this poorly done editing attempt was made in an effort to “clarify” the movie.

The following are some particular issues with the condensed form. Before a newspaper headline stating that Prohibition has been approved, there is a speakeasy scene. Then, on what seems like the day after, but is actually six years later, prohibition is abolished. A woman who has never been seen before in the movie is present when two gangsters discuss robbing a bank; the sequence introducing her has been cut. Unexpectedly, a labor leader shows up and gets the gangsters into a precarious position. Later, he compromises, but to whom? We don’t know if the men killing De Niro’s girlfriend, a character we’ve hardly encountered, are from the police or the mob. And now for a genuine stinker: De Niro exits a chamber he has never seen before at the conclusion of the condensed version by passing through a hidden panel in the wall. How did he discover its presence? He was informed that it was there in the lengthy version. In the condensed form, his abrupt departure demonstrates his simple disdain for the audience. Also, you will find out which character are you in this Once Upon A Time In America quiz. The short version omits many of the movie’s most stunning shots, including one breathtaking scene where a Frisbee unexpectedly appears to indicate a flash-forward and another where the past becomes the present as The Beatles’ “Yesterday” sneaks onto the soundtrack. I challenge anyone to comprehend the short version’s plot because relationships are cut short and scenes are given a shortened existence. Four stars are awarded to the first season of “Once Upon a Time in America”. The condensed form is a farce.
