Robert Frost wrote in a poem titled Home Burial that “from the time when one is sick to the time when one dies/One is alone.” In the case of critical illness, the stages of denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance that were so well defined by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross are experienced by the patient. And they do it on their own. No matter how loving and devoted they are to them, those around them will go through their own stages. It is not uncommon for them to be overcome by feelings of fear, grief, helplessness, compassion, loneliness, survivor guilt, exhaustion, and the guilt of being angry at the person who is dying. However, they will never be able to comprehend the experience of confronting death, or of viewing one’s previous life from the other side of a seemingly impenetrable glass wall.

Regular Love” stars Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville in the story of a couple who must navigate the world of serious illness, with its euphemisms and delays, from initial tests that are “concerning” to the diagnosis: “the results were not what we hoped.” Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville are stunning in the film. There’s also surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy to consider. Health-care professionals are sympathetic, but they maintain a distance. Random encounters with other patients seem to have a vital importance in this situation.

The smallest details are thoughtfully observed and portrayed with sympathetic honesty in this first screenplay by Irish playwright Owen McCafferty, who was inspired by his own wife’s experience with breast cancer while writing his own plays. Tom (Neeson) and Joan (Manville) have a warm and affectionate relationship that is punctuated by a lot of gentle teasing that may appear to be bickering but is actually their own brand of banter that they have clearly honed over decades of friendship and marriage. Some speculate that her given name is a reference to Darby and Joan, a popular British term that originated in an 18th century poem and has come be used to refer to any unassuming (“ordinary”), long-term married couple who are deeply devoted. They are “ever uneasy asunder,” to use the language of the poem.

Tom and Joan are about to become unsettled and torn apart by the forces of nature. Joan notices a lump in her breast while she’s in the shower. Her last mammogram, which was eight months prior, had revealed no abnormalities, so the doctor’s initial response is reassuring to her. However, tests must be performed to ensure that everything is as it should be. The outcomes are not encouraging. As time goes on, even the “good” results aren’t all that good, and the treatments are extremely painful.

Joan notices a familiar face in the hospital waiting room and recognizes it. It’s Peter (David Wilmot), another cancer patient, who answers the phone. He used to be a teacher, and he used to have Joan’s daughter Debbie in his class. McCafferty understands the instantaneous, straight-to-the-point intimacy that fellow patients experience, as well as the comfort that they derive from being able to be honest with one another. With their companionable but indirect mode of communication, Joan and Tom are completely at ease with their situation. Peter and Joan express themselves with the kind of directness that can only be achieved when one’s time is limited and one’s options are even more restricted.

McCafferty demonstrates this in even the most brief of encounters, such as with a fellow patient who offers Joan some advice on chemo treatment. The opportunity to provide sympathetic reassurance to another patient preparing for her first treatment presents itself later, and Joan takes advantage of the opportunity, even as she looks at the young woman’s long hair, knowing what is to come.

About the quiz

Manville delivers a performance that is both heartbreakingly delicate and courageous. When her hair begins to fall out in clumps, Tom decides it is time to shave her head and cut her hair completely off. Keep an eye on her expression as she convincingly pretends to find everything amusing as long as he is present. When she is alone, she notices that the same expression fades away when she confronts her own reflection in the mirror. Joan and Tom bid her breasts a fond farewell in a scene that is so intimate that it is almost intrusive on the viewer. A kaleidoscope of moods and emotions is thrown at Manville at every turn, and every one of them is precise, fearless, and piercingly honest. To say that Tom and Joan are out of the ordinary would be an understatement, and their story demonstrates that love is no exception. Also, you must try to play this Ordinary Love quiz.
