“Overboard” is yet another variation on the old, dependable story of the snob who discovers what it’s like to live on the other side of the world. Everything about the formula is set in stone: the character is introduced as stuck-up, arrogant, and spoiled, and then something happens to bring reality slamming down the door on him. By the end of the film, the hero has discovered humility, gratitude, and love for himself and for others.

One of the reasons this formula has lasted so long is that it is dependable, as Goldie Hawn cheerfully demonstrates in her new film, “Overboard,” which opens today. In this story, there isn’t a single major development that we don’t know about 30 minutes in advance, but what does it matter when the performances are so much fun and there are so many comic delights along the way? A film like this not only could have been directed by Frank Capra or Preston Sturges, but it very well could have been directed by either of them.

Editor’s Picks

As a wealthy, entitled society lady who lives on a luxury yacht with her snobbish husband (Edward Herrmann) and long-suffering butler, Hawn is a standout performance (Roddy McDowall). In order to make use of her closet space while the yacht is docked for repairs, she hires a local carpenter (Kurt Russell) to complete the job. When he is finished, she refuses to pay him because he did not use cedar wood – and doesn’t everyone know that cedar is used in the construction of closets? The following disagreement leads to her throwing Russell overboard and throwing his tools into the water after him.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Overboard quiz.

Later that night, Hawn herself falls overboard and is struck by a garbage scow, resulting in her being taken to a local hospital with no memory of what happened. Russell plots his vengeance after seeing Hawn’s battered photo on the news. He intends to claim Hawn as his long-lost wife and bring her down a notch or two by employing her as a domestic worker and babysitter for his four misbehaving sons.

What happens next, everyone, now that we’re all together? Is there a scene of uprising taking place? And then there’s a scene in which Hawn demonstrates her incompetence by cleaning the windows with furniture polish? And there’s a scene in which Russell and the boys play cruel jokes on her. And perhaps a scene in which she begins to change, even if only a little? And a scene in which the boys begin to warm up to her? And then there’s that moment when she starts to feel like she belongs with this family, and she feels love and pride for them? What follows is a scene where her snotty husband makes an appearance once more. What about a scene in which she confronts Russell for deceiving her in such a cruel manner?

When it comes to “Overboard,” if you can’t find each and every one of those scenes, you’ll be out at the candy counter. The general outline of this story – a spoiled character is transformed by a humbling experience – has even been followed before by Hawn herself, in “Private Benjamin,” which is set in the same universe.

About the quiz

The genuine charm, wit, and warm energy emanating from the entire cast and director Garry Marshall, on the other hand, are what distinguish “Overboard.” Hawn and Russell have a good chemistry together, never overacting scenes that could have easily devolved into disaster.

Every scene in the film is filled with dozens of amusing little details, such as the way McDowall arrives on time with the caviar and then gets yelled at for being late. It’s also worth mentioning the way Michael Hagerty, who plays Russell’s best friend, covers up when Hawn discovers a pair of her own pants in Russell’s truck and assumes they must belong to someone else (“I got lucky with one of them phone-for-sex gals”).

If the ending of “Overboard” reminds you of the movie “The African Queen,” it could be because the entire film is inspired by the Humphrey Bogart-Katharine Hepburn relationship, in which a rude and crude man is civilized by a real lady. It is this development that is crossed with the heartless bitch who is civilized by a true gentleman in the film “Overboard.” In a way, it’s a pleasant process that results in a warm and humorous film.
