Paddington’s release in 2015 was like a breath of fresh air, given how long it had been in development. It managed to charm viewers of all ages with its delightful mixture of earnestness, slapstick, and unabashedly punny word play, while also making an incisive statement about the importance of being kind to others who may appear foreign or different.
The talking bear from Darkest Peru, with his endearingly furry frame and tenacious spirit, conveyed a pointed political message while remaining soft and approachable to the youngest members of the audience, who loved him. It didn’t matter that he came from an old-fashioned family; the story he was telling felt completely contemporary. This is no small accomplishment.
It takes three years for “Paddington 2” to demonstrate that the clever-yet-sweet combination that defined the first live-action film was no fluke. And, unfortunately, the allegory about immigration it provides is more relevant than ever in the post-Brexit, post-Trump world in which we now find ourselves.
With a script he co-wrote with Simon Farnaby (and based on Michael Bond’s beloved book series), returning director Paul King once again depicts a London that is both colorfully picturesque and fraught with danger, as he did in the previous film. Paddington Bear (voiced once more by Ben Whishaw in soothing tones) has now settled into his new life in Windsor Gardens with the Brown family, which includes mother and father Mary and Henry (Sally Hawkins and Hugh Bonneville), daughter and son Judy and Jonathan (Madeleine Harris and Samuel Joslin), and Mrs. Bird, who has been working for them for many years (Julie Walters). He is an important member of the community, providing assistance to forgetful neighbors, running errands for friends, and generally brightening everyone’s day.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Paddington 2 quiz.
His Aunt Lucy (voiced once again by Imelda Staunton, who is also a member of the film’s impressive cast of veteran British actors) is about to celebrate her 100th birthday, and Paddington is determined to get her the best present possible. As soon as he comes across an intricate, vintage pop-up book of London in the antique store owned by his old friend Mr. Gruber (Jim Broadbent), he realizes he’s found the perfect item to express his affection for the woman—or should we say, mama bear— who raised him.
(The pop-up book sequence is THE high point of a film that is awash in visually stunning special effects.) Despite the fact that Paddington’s fur is visibly tactile, his immersion in this live-action world is completely natural. His antics may be outlandish, but they are always grounded in reality from a visual standpoint. It’s both visually and emotionally enthralling when the pages of the pop-up book come to life through a variety of animated styles—and Paddington finds himself wandering through them as he tells the story of Aunt Lucy’s love of London.)

Thus, Paddington undertakes a series of odd jobs to raise enough money to purchase the book—and King meticulously designs the set-ups for each new gig, as well as the inevitable meltdowns that occur with each new gig. Despite the fact that you can see the wheels turning, it’s still hilarious to see them fall off every time. However, he is not the only one who has his sights set on it.

Phoenix Buchanan, a washed-up actor turned dog-food pitchman with a dashing name, also wants the book to explore its hidden secrets for his own nefarious purposes, which he hopes to accomplish through the book. As Nicole Kidman clearly relished her role as the evil taxidermist on the prowl for Paddington Bear in the first film, Hugh Grant revels in his character’s delusional theatricality in this sequel. This film’s depiction of the increasing villainy of the ’90s rom-com darling, which continues through the “Bridget Jones” films and culminates in this film, is a true pleasure to watch. Phoenix Buchanan is the role that Grant was destined to play. She is outwardly charming, but on the inside she is cunning and cunning.
When Paddington breaks into the bookshop one night and steals the book, he is falsely accused of the crime and ends up in prison as a result. This may sound gloomy, but this is where the twee Wes Anderson influences that were so prevalent in the original “Paddington” manifest themselves once more in a big way. In addition to accidentally dyeing his fellow prisoners’ uniforms a cheerful shade of pink while on laundry duty (a scene that King captures with precise symmetry), Paddington also manages to charm the meanest guy in the facility, prison cook Knuckles McGinty (Brendan Gleeson), by introducing him to his favorite food, the very civilized marmalade.
About the quiz
No matter what is thrown at him, whether it is wrongful imprisonment, nefarious adversaries, or just plain mean words, Paddington always manages to come out on the other side with his sense of self intact by adhering to a deceptively simple philosophy. He believes that if you are kind to others, everything will turn out all right in the end. Even though it isn’t a spoiler to say that Paddington is able to clear his name with the assistance of his family and friends, you may be surprised by how touching the resolution to all of his problems is.
