The movie “Paddington,” which is a combination of live action and computer animation and is based on the stories of a well-known stuffed bear, manages to pull off a pretty difficult balancing act. It manages to be both archaic and cutting-edge at the same time. While firmly establishing the character in a modern setting, it stays true to the character’s origins and history. It has a charming sense of humor and is punny to an embarrassing degree. (This is the kind of movie where the GPS tells the driver to bear left during a car chase, and wouldn’t you know it, there’s a bear on the left.)

But “Paddington,” with all of its wordplay and antics and international adventures, is also a story that functions as an allegory about immigration in a rather underhanded way. Which is obviously what you want in a movie intended for children. In point of fact, writer and director Paul King tackles this touchy subject in a manner that won’t appear to be overly preachy to adults, but still has a chance of striking a chord with the younger members of the audience. Words to the effect of, “Please look after this bear. Thank you,” was handwritten on a paper tag and tied around the neck of our minuscule, furry hero, tug, giving the phrase an extra layer of significance when viewed from this vantage point. Despite this, “Paddington” as a whole manages to stay relatively light on its paws (or feet).

The film by King provides a backstory for the bear that is obsessed with marmalade in the children’s books written by Michael Bond. When we first meet Paddington, he is residing in Darkest Peru with his aunt and uncle. Ben Whishaw provides Paddington’s endearing voice, and there are a few light touches that are reminiscent of Robin Williams (Imelda Staunton and Michael Gambon). When a British explorer came to the area many years ago, he was astounded to learn that there were intelligent bears who could communicate with one another. Now, when it is time for young Paddington to make his own way in the world, his aunt sends him to London because the explorer promised that they’d always be welcome there. She does this because London is Paddington’s favorite city.

Therefore, he sets sail, donning the distinctive red floppy hat that has become his trademark and bringing an abundance of his preferred foods in order to sustain him throughout the duration of the lengthy voyage. However, when he arrives in London, not only are people not surprised to meet a walking, talking bear, but they also rudely disregard his genuine attempts to connect with them. Only the Brown family, who are passing by on the platform at Paddington Station, and particularly the open-minded Mrs. Brown (Sally Hawkins), have the courage to show any kindness to this homeless and disheveled creature. (We should all be thankful that she also acknowledges what a marvel he is in his verbosity so that we can continue watching the movie.) The other members of the Brown family, including the overly cautious Mr. Brown (Hugh Bonneville), Judy (Madeleine Harris), and Jonathan (Samuel Joslin), have a skeptical attitude toward him.

Paddington appears to have adjusted to life in proper civilization after a series of clumsy and disastrous antics, some of which are more amusing than others. Now that he has found his rhythm, Paddington appears to have settled in. Despite the fact that he is obviously missing his family and friends back home, he keeps a positive attitude. The computer-generated imagery (CGI) effects are flawless here, just as they were in “Ted.” The diminutive toy is velvety and textured and exquisitely detailed, and it has evocative facial gestures that help create an unexpected emotional connection. Paddington also finds himself in an unexpected amount of serious danger, which may be unsettling for the younger members of the audience. (Don’t worry—going he’s to make it through this.)

Although the humor can be broad (such as Nicole Kidman’s ruthlessly driven taxidermist dressed in borderline-dominatrix gear) and even a little bit crude (such as some literal toilet humor when Paddington has trouble in the loo), “Paddington” also features some lovely and even delicate imagery throughout the film. When King depicts the Browns’ tall, narrow home as a dollhouse that opens up to reveal the family members going about their business in various rooms, King is straight-up stealing from Wes Anderson. In addition, a mural of a tree that is painted on the wall of the curved staircase that the Browns have in their home undergoes numerous changes throughout the course of the movie.
