According to Roger Ebert

“Kung Fu Panda” is a story whose title almost tells the entire story of the film. The idea of a big, fuzzy panda engaging in martial-arts combat is so difficult to comprehend that you suspect (and are likely to be correct) that the panda is the star of a formula in which he has an impossible chance of success. That will suffice for the panda’s intended audience of children and younger teens, and the film depicts his adventures in beautifully drawn Cinemascope animation, which will appeal to them as well. (It will also be shown in IMAX theaters in some locations).

This animated film follows the adventures of Po (voiced by Jack Black), a panda who is so obese that he can barely get out of bed. He works for his father, Mr. Ping (James Hong), in a noodle shop where he sells Ping’s legendary Secret Ingredient, which has become legendary in its own right. Even Po is perplexed as to how Ping, who appears to be a stork or some other billed member of the avian family, came to be the father of a panda, but then the film is filled with a wide variety of creatures who don’t seem to notice the differences between themselves.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Pandas quiz.

These people live in the beautiful Valley of Peace, with an ancient temple towering above them, and they have to climb zillions of steps, which Po can barely manage. The Dragon Warrior, played by Ian McShane, must scale the cliffs, pulling a noodle wagon, in order to witness the selection of the Dragon Warrior, who will face off against the dreaded Tai Lung (Ian McShane) in kung-fu combat. It has been decided on the “Furious Five,” which are as follows: Monkey (Jackie Chan), Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Viper (Lucy Liu), and Crane (Jackie Chan) (David Cross). Tigress appears to be capable of causing significant damage, but the other characters are less than impressive. The mantis, in particular, appears to weigh no more than an ounce at most. In this story, the wise Shifu, who has Dustin Hoffman’s voice, is one of the more dimensional characters in a story that doesn’t give the others much depth, has trained all five of them (for what seems like an eternity, from what I can tell). To be honest with you, Oogway (Randall Duk Kim), an ancient turtle, is the one who has final say. And he chooses — yes, he chooses the hapless and pudgy Po — to be his apprentice.

The story then devolves into a series of action sequences, which are somewhat undermined by the fact that the combatants appear to be impervious to injury, even when they fall from dizzying heights and smash stones open with their heads. There’s an extended battle with Tai Lung on a collapsing suspension bridge (haven’t we seen this before? ), hand-to-hand combat with Po and Tai Lung, and, to top it all off, an energizing competition over a single dumpling that takes center stage.

“Kung Fu Panda” isn’t one of the best recent animated films, but it’s still enjoyable. The plot is far too predictable, and, to be honest, Po himself didn’t completely captivate me with his charm. However, it is beautifully drawn, the action sequences are packed with energy, and the film is short enough that older viewers will be forgiving of the flaws. For the kids, of course, it’s all the same as before, and here they are doing it all over again.
