The aptly named “Penguins of Madagascar” stars the scene-stealing penguins from the “Madagascar” film series.

One may imagine that a little of these bizarre beings would go a long way. The idea that these overconfident penguins, who think of themselves as super spies, are completely bumbling and inept, yet they manage to wriggle out of every tricky situation not only to survive but thrive and save the day, is the basis of this family-friendly animated comedy from co-directors Eric Darnell and Simon J. Smith.

But because of the pacing, the humor, and the creative sight gags, it’s tough to avoid being swept up in the contagious spirit of the whole thing. The script, which is the work of John Aboud, Michael Colton, and Brandon Sawyer, finds enough ways to work that one joke into the plot to at least make it entertaining. One of the funniest parts of all is how seriously the impressive voice ensemble, which includes John Malkovich and the ubiquitous Benedict Cumberbatch, takes this ridiculous work.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Penguins Of Madagascar quiz.

As movie follows these endearing creatures on their own adventure, “Penguins of Madagascar” functions as both an origin story and a spin-off. (The zoo animals that Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, and Jada Pinkett Smith provided voices for in the original series are not there.) Starting in Antarctica, a lengthy line of penguins is waddling aimlessly over the harsh, snowy landscape because (as even they admit), they aren’t permitted to think for themselves. In a sly dig at the overabundance of penguin-related products over the past few years, this is simply what they do—and what the camera crews anticipate them to do.

We know we’re in for a whole ‘nother level of hilarity directed primarily at the grownups in the audience as Werner Herzog’s narration begins, portraying the penguins’ miserable situation in his normally great, dramatic way. Yes, all animated films are jam-packed with snarky pop-culture references and self-referential humor, but “Penguins of Madagascar” does this consistently brilliantly. It’s part of the joy that so much of the word play is so purposefully cringe-inducing, including a running gag with famous people’s names.

The foursome’s self-declared leader is the sleek Skipper (voiced by series regular Tom McGrath). The group’s resident pessimist and the brains of the operation is Kowalski (Chris Miller). The least evolved of the four, Rico (Conrad Vernon), just consumes stuff and grunts, although he can be helpful in a pinch. The other three had known the soft-spoken and innocent Private (Christopher Knights), who is the de facto younger brother, since the moment he was conceived.

About the quiz

Dr. Octavius Brine (Malkovich), a crazy scientist who is actually a malevolent, shape-shifting octopus by the name of Dave, captures them during one of their undercover missions. He seems to have been following the four penguins all across the world since he feels that they keep outshining him at different zoos and aquariums. In order to convert penguins into monstrous versions of themselves and make them less cuddly and appealing to the general public, he plans to catch as many as he can from all around the world.

(By the way, this was essentially the driving force for the villainous El Macho in “Despicable Me 2”). To help him carry out his evil scheme, he kidnapped almost all of Gru’s minions, pumped them up with high-tech jelly, and converted them into an army of nasty, purple minions. I’ve seen this movie a lot because I have a 5-year-old.)

Skipper and his friends attempt to sabotage Dave’s plot, but Dave also has a team of real animal super spies under the command of a wolf named Classified, in a playful game of who’s on first. The fact that Cumberbatch can play this role as well as the voice of the terrifying dragon Smaug from the sweeping “Hobbit” franchise—as well as the brilliant mathematician Alan Turing in this week’s “The Imitation Game”—speaks to his boundless versatility. Cumberbatch voices the character with complete authority and gravitas.

From this point on, it’s just spies vs. spies in a succession of crazy action scenes, and the antics get a little old after a while. The 90-minute running time of “Penguins of Madagascar” looks about appropriate and couldn’t have gone on much longer. You’ll be happy you took a ride with these flightless birds if you’re rushing around completing your holiday shopping and looking for a quick break.
