Simply put, it’s impossible to stay away from the impossible adorableness on display in the latest Disneynature documentary, “Penguins.” This is impossible to accomplish despite the cutesy anthropomorphizing, the overly tidy nature of the story it is telling, and the knowingly cheesy soundtrack of ’80s tunes accompanying the adventures of these creatures on their journey through the world.

Come on, you can’t be serious. Penguins waddling across Antarctica for 76 minutes is the subject of this video. In IMAX format.

Editor’s Picks

In addition, as has always been the case with these Disneynature documentaries, which are released around Earth Day almost every year, the images are truly spectacular—especially if you have the opportunity to view them on a large-format screen. “Penguins,” which follows in the footsteps of films such as “African Cats,” “Bears,” and “Monkey Kingdom,” is one of the better entries, thanks to its balance of engrossing storytelling and how-did-they-get-that shots. In order to capture both cuddly intimacy and life-threatening intensity, series veteran Alastair Fothergill, director Jeff Wilson, co-director Mark Linfield, and their team went to extremes at the end of the world in brutal weather conditions to capture moments of both. As a result of the G rating, you can rest assured that everything will be fine, although the film’s climactic showdown is particularly stressful.)
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Penguins quiz.

Everything, on the other hand, is fantastic at the beginning. A young Adelie penguin named Steve (because the animals in these movies always have names, back stories, and human characteristics) is introduced to us as he toddles along on a sunny, icy stretch of Antarctic tundra in the film. This is done to the tune of Patti LaBelle’s upbeat “Stir It Up,” which you’ve probably never heard before because it was used to accompany Eddie Murphy’s antics in the 1984 film “Beverly Hills Cop.” In this episode, we learn that Steve is 5 years old and that he is embarking on the annual 100-mile journey with hundreds of thousands of other male penguins to the colony where they will find female partners, build nests, mating with them, and begin their families. In fact, this was the premise of the Academy Award-winning 2005 documentary “March of the Penguins,” which was focused on the larger emperor penguins. There is no such thing as having too much of a good thing in this situation.)

Nevertheless, we can tell by his clumsy walking style, as he bops, wobbles, and slips along the slippery surface of the road, that Steve has been custom-made to fit the stereotype of the lovably awkward persona. The simple act of watching him flap his tiny black and white fins is enough to make you laugh. One of the most striking examples of this is provided by Ed Helms, who serves as both narrator and Steve’s internal monologue as he stumbles from one challenge to the next in his charming everyman voice. However, even though this is all unfamiliar territory for Steve, his proclivity for getting himself into trouble, becoming disoriented, arriving late, or finding himself in danger is enough to make you wonder if we are, in fact, watching the same “Steve” the entire time. Was it possible for a single penguin to be so consistently clueless in such a narratively convenient manner?

Less cynical viewers will be enthralled by the majesty of the proceedings, which are heavy on awe-inspiring snowy vistas and crystal-clear underwater swims but light on actual information and scientific information. Steve and his fellow penguins, on the other hand, are visible as they struggle to flee from predators such as killer whales, leopard seals, and skuas, birds that swoop in to steal vulnerable chicks and unattended penguin eggs. Simply seeing Steve and his friend, Adeline, in action as we do here, with incredible, up-close access, does more to help us relate to them than any overbearing voiceover could. Steve and Adeline are both responsible parents who work well as a team protecting their two furry babies (good lord, are they cute).

About the quiz

A storm that sweeps in with blinding winds, blizzard conditions, and hurricane-force winds are captured by Fothergill, Wilson, and their team, as well as the unforgiving nature of the elements. Such sequences make you appreciate the enormous amount of work that went into bringing “Penguins” to the screen over the course of a three-year shoot—so make sure to stay through the closing credits to get all of your how-did-they-get-that? questions answered, and then some. Also, you must try to play this Penguins quiz.
