In “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway,” the bunnies are fluffy, the produce is plentiful, and the antics are consistently amusing and entertaining. Despite this, it’s difficult to avoid the impression that Will Gluck’s sequel to 2018’s “Peter Rabbit” is straining to capture the fast-paced, meta whimsy of the original while also cramming in a slew of new characters and themes. It is a tedious result, with only brief bursts of playful inspiration interspersed throughout the piece.

This live-action/computer-generated-animation adventure, on the other hand, looks spectacular, with the high-tech, talking creatures seamlessly integrated into the film’s twee English setting. You have the distinct impression that you could reach out and pet Peter’s furry head if you so desired—if only you had the desire. Inspired by the beloved Beatrix Potter children’s book series, director Gluck and screenwriter Patrick Burleigh push Peter’s impishness into territory that is more obnoxious, ostensibly for the purpose of teaching him life lessons about… not selling out, perhaps?

That’s one of the troubling threads running through this story: an awareness of the commercialization of these characters by removing them from their traditional, quiet setting and placing them in a zanier, contemporary one while also making fun of the decision to do so. Rose Byrne’s character—named Bea, in case you weren’t able to make the connection—is now the author of a sweet, illustrated book about Peter and his animal friends, with plans for a 23-book series, the same number of books that J.K. Rowling wrote for Harry Potter. During the course of the film, as Bea finds herself succumbing to the thrills of fame and success, one of the rabbits observes that the whole enterprise will most likely be adapted into “a sassy hipfest for commercial gain—most likely by an American,” casting a knowing glance into the camera. Peter and his friends eventually embark on the kinds of outrageous adventures that Bea believes are too unbelievable for her characters and too unethical for her to write about.

However, at the beginning of the film, Bea and Thomas McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson, who is as physically fit as ever) are getting married in front of their friends and the farm animals. Both Mr. McGregor and Peter (again voiced by the incomparable James Corden) have reached an uneasy truce over the two things they both adore: vegetables and the actress Bea Arthur. As things become more complicated, Bea finds herself falling for charismatic and handsome publisher Nigel Basil-Jones (David Oyelowo), with a name that sounds like it belongs on an episode of Spinal Tap. During a visit to London, Peter comes to the realization that he has been transformed into a villain in Basil-Jones’ vision of the Peter Rabbit universe. Because, he reasoned, “Why not play the bad guy if I’m just going to be framed for it?” and joins forces with a fellow rabbit who resembles Fagin, a street thief named Barnabas (Lennie James), and his gang of cunning kittens.

The culmination of this alliance is a grand scheme to rob the local farmers market, which is both hilariously detailed in its planning and universal in its depiction of the artisanal specialties available for purchase at the market. While committing a house burglary, Barnabas also says something extremely relatable, such as how every refrigerator contains an expensive bottle of champagne that has been saved for a special occasion that never comes. (That one was even recognized by my 11-year-old, who leaned over and whispered, “It’s true!” during a screening.) As for the rest of Peter’s true family and friends, they mostly appear in cameos for wacky interludes, such as Cottontail’s discovery of the wonders of jellybeans, narrator Flopsy (Margot Robbie), Mopsy (Elizabeth Debicki), and Benjamin (Colin Moody), who is also a cameo.

Throughout the film, there is an amusing running gag in which a busking squirrel (singer-songwriter Tim Minchin) just so happens to appear everywhere at the same time and perform exactly the song that sums up Peter’s feelings at the time. However, many of the self-referential jokes in this film are throwbacks to the first film, such as the deer caught in the headlights and the rooster who believes he is responsible for the sun rising each morning. Sure, you have to play the hits, but these passages are a little flat this time around.

About the quiz

“Peter Rabbit 2” is attempting to have its carrot and eat it, too, by indulging in the very instincts that it claims are problematic in terms of artistic expression. However, it’s possible that this will not bother you. Perhaps you’ll be grateful for the opportunity to return to the theater and to do so with your children in the future. When it comes to this, the sequel keeps things moving along in an entertainingly upbeat manner.
