According to the teachings of the Buddhists, the bodhi tree is the tree beneath which one can achieve enlightenment. Although this is not exactly how it works with Bodhi, the surfing bank robber who is the existential hero of “Point Break,” the character of Bodhi is so compelling that a young FBI agent finds himself falling under his spell. Or perhaps it is Southern California as a whole that entices the agent; after all, it is a place where one can go surfing, skydiving, and experience strange karma; all of these things are very alluring to a conventional football hero from Ohio.
Keanu Reeves plays the hero, a former Rose Bowl star with a bum knee who joined the FBI and has been assigned to the Los Angeles field office. The hero’s name is Johnny Utah, which is a rather unthankful name. The frustration level at the bureau has been rising due to a string of bank robberies. They call themselves the Ex-Presidents, and they wear rubber masks of former presidents Nixon, Carter, Reagan, and LBJ. These four criminals have successfully carried out a series of bank heists while leaving no traces behind.
Except one. A man named Pappas, played by Gary Busey, is assigned as Johnny Utah’s partner. Pappas is convinced that the robbers are surfers because one of them has a tan line and a strand of hair discovered at the scene of the crime was contaminated with the same contaminants that can be found at a popular surfing beach. Therefore, he succeeds in persuading Utah to assume the identity of a surfer so that he can investigate the crime.

The outcome is impressive in its level of effectiveness.
