Although it aspires to be the next “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” for a new generation, “Pokémon Detective Pikachu” is frequently compared to “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze.” Rob Letterman’s PG-rated adventure film, which is crammed to the gills with allusions to the world of the international phenomenon known as Pokémon, begins with a clever premise and intriguing world-building, but soon falls victim to a common problem of the modern blockbuster: shallow, CGI-heavy noise. It does better than average considering that it was created to meet the incredibly low bar of the video game adaptation genre, which this technically is because it shares elements with a 2016 Nintendo DS game — however, it is unlikely to work for anyone who isn’t a diehard fan of everything Pokémon. (On a related note, my fourth-grader adored it.)
Tim Goodman is played by Justice Smith, a young man who lives on the outskirts of Ryme City, a city that has emerged as a model for human-Pokémon cohabitation in recent years. A man named Howard Clifford (Bill Nighy), known as the “Steve Jobs of the Pokémon world,” desired a place where the two species could coexist in greater comfort. He built a facility where the two species could coexist in greater comfort and freedom. Therefore, characters such as Police Lieutenant Hide Yoshida (Ken Watanabe, in an unbelievably wasted performance) and young reporter Lucy Stevens (Kathryn Newton) have Pokémon partners, but there isn’t a strong emphasis on training, fighting, or other aspects of the Pokémon franchise. Sadly, Clifford is nearing the end of his life and will be succeeded by his son Roger (Chris Geere), who does not appear to be as peace-loving as his beloved father.
After Tim’s father, a police detective, is killed in a car accident, Goodman travels to Ryme City to figure out exactly what happened to him. When he gets to that point, he comes face to face with Tim’s partner Pikachu. The majority of Pokémon sound like they’re saying their names in a cutesy voice to other Pokémon or to people. As a result, the little yellow dude appears to be saying variations on the word “Pikachu” to everyone in Ryme City—all except Tim, that is. Ryan Reynolds provides the voice for Pikachu when he speaks to Tim, and his performance is solid and entertaining, especially in the first half of the film, before the plot and CGI begin to detract from it. Tim and Pikachu are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Tim’s father, which leads them into an investigation involving what is essentially a Pokemon PED known as ‘R’ and the involvement of a legendary Pokémon known as Mewtoo, both of whom are played by Tim and Pikachu respectively.

In “Pokémon Detective Pikachu,” one of the most impressive aspects of the setting is the design of Ryme City. With its massive skyscrapers and colorful billboards perched on the tops of all of them, it has echoes of the film “Blade Runner,” if the replicants had been replaced by cuddly creatures instead of robots. Some of the most enjoyable aspects of “Detective Pikachu” are simply marveling at the stunning visuals that greet Tim when he first arrives in Ryme City and observing how the film’s creators have incorporated Pokémon mythology into a massive urban setting. The film’s visual impact diminishes in the middle as it becomes increasingly reliant on computer-generated imagery and expository-heavy flashbacks delivered through hologram technology that may be the laziest screenwriting technique of the year—magic holograms that can show us and the characters everything that happened!

It is at this point that someone might object and say that I am being overly critical of a film that has been arguably stolen by a supporting Pokémon named Psyduck, who’s anxiety must be managed or he will explode (I could relate, dude). In that gray area where it wants to be taken seriously enough to allow for questions about its themes and plot but also feels like it wants to be entertaining for children, “Detective Pikachu” is a delight. Therefore, it is a little too complicated for children (my second grader was a little perplexed), and it is too shallow for adults and teenagers to even remember it the next day. “Pokémon Detective Pikachu” is the type of film that uses manipulative plot devices such as loss and estrangement to further the plot of the film. It’s a screenplay with a lot of holes in it, and it has less thematic resonance than most of the Pokémon cartoons.

It’s true that not everything can be Pixar-esque in terms of screenwriting, but when the design is this good, it’s disheartening when you consider how little the writers do with this world. One of the most rewarding aspects of watching a movie with your children is talking about the themes presented in the film and how the film conveys them. However, any discussion of “Detective Pikachu” quickly returns to the visuals or characters from the Pokéverse that your children have spotted on the periphery. After a poorly-executed scene involving moving earth that is really just loud and annoying (and the CGI doesn’t look all that good, especially in that scene), the human characters and the actual plot simply never gain any weight or momentum, and the movie never recovers from that point.
About the quiz
“Pokémon Detective Pikachu” has the potential to serve as the foundation for a successful franchise. If it’s successful, which it almost certainly will be, I’ll actually look forward to returning to this universe. Now that the visuals have been defined and the rules have been clarified, it is possible that the writers will provide their characters—both human and Pokémon—with something more interesting to say and do in the future episodes. What will they do with them now that they’ve “collected them all” is a mystery. Also, you must try to play this Pokemon Detective Pikachu quiz.
