Just to be clear, the word “pro” “mare” is pronounced as if you are in favor of a female horse, which is not the case. “Pro-mar-ay,” as in “pro-mar-ay,” which rhymes with “Volare,” which is a fun song to sing. It isn’t until nearly an hour into this frantic Japanese animated film, the first feature from a production house known as Trigger, that the meaning of the word is explained.

Before the title is explained, the film could have been titled “Burning Rescue” or “Mad Burnish,” which would have been equally appropriate. Following the film’s evocative and low-on-exposition opening scene, these are the two forces pitted against one another. A chaotic earth is depicted with individuals from all over the world becoming enraged and spontaneously combusting, shooting pink/purple flame at the objects of their disapproval—while also burning up much of the rest of the environment in the process. In the intervening thirty years, the mutants known as the “Burnish” have been tamed, thanks in part to the efforts of firefighter squads made up of pumped-up children. This band of outlaws goes by the name of “Burning Rescue,” and their leader is the brazen, blue-haired Galo Thymos, a devout follower of Primeopolis’ charismatic governor Kray Foresight.

The kids, led by Lio Fotia and Galo, learn some shocking information after apprehending the androgynous and enraged leader of the resurrected Burnishers. The information makes them question whether or not they are fighting for the right side. In fact, they are not, which is not uncommon in dystopian anime. Due to the fact that one of the Rescuers’ number has a sister who works as Foresight’s lead researcher, the eager world-savers find themselves pitted against their former backers, with Galo and Lio—literally “makers of fire and ice”—piloting a giant robot against Foresight and his own machine, respectively.

All of these elements are common to Japanese animated science fiction: a convoluted plot, a dystopian future, and the grandiosity of a particular type of heroism within that future. What exactly is new here? There are two things. The good-guy protagonists are conceived and styled not only in the context of rich precedents within the genre, but also, regrettably, in the context of American “CGI” spinoffs. Yuck. However, the design and animation, which is busy, brash, and edgy, and which uses a lot of unusual colors, are the better news. The use of freeze-frame imagery, fake lens flares (in this film, they are square), and the way the film pushes physical action into the realms of visual abstraction are all exhilarating aspects of the film’s storytelling.

It’s possible that the battle scenes are a little too much of a good thing. Almost always, they consist of a hero looking at a villain and screaming “AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!,” and they frequently do this more than a half dozen times in a single face-to-face confrontation. Aside from that, the songs and theme music are not only cheesy, but they are also almost always present; if this is not your cup of tea, you will have to quickly develop a tolerance for it.
Also, you will find out which character are you in this Promare quiz.

Despite this, there’s a lot of crunch and glitz to be found here. However, despite the fact that the overall tone is targeted at teens, the level of creative energy and execution on display is consistently impressive.
