“Queen Bees” is a gentle romantic comedy set in a retirement community where one character describes the residents as “‘Mean Girls’ with Medic Alert bracelets.” A half-dozen veteran performers do their best to elevate a shaky script in “Queen Bees.” Former sitcom and sitcom-like movie director Michael Lembeck (“Friends,” “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause”) keeps things light-hearted, though that can sometimes translate into being a little slap-stick. Consider the film “Mean Golden Girls.”

Helen is played by Ellen Burstyn, who portrays a widow who is extremely attached to her devoted grandson Peter (Matthew Barnes). Every Thursday, he pays her a visit in the home she built with her late husband, and they have tea together. Helen is also emotionally attached to the house, and she barely communicates with her daughter Laura (Elizabeth Mitchell), Peter’s mother, or a realtor who has suggested that she sell the house and move into a nearby retirement community called Pine Grove, which is set to open soon. Helen is meticulous about keeping the house in order, but she can be a bit forgetful at times. As a result of the kitchen fire, Helen is forced to vacate the premises while the house is being repaired. Pine Grove is the only option left to her, and she reluctantly agrees to relocate there for a period of one month.

Editor’s Picks

The bossy AARP mean girls who tell Helen she has to leave “their” table in the dining room and will not admit her to the bridge club are the source of Helen’s annoyance. “I’m only staying for a month,” she snaps when she hears the greetings. “I’m not staying for a month,” she snaps when she hears the greetings. The leader of the “cool” group is the acerbic bully Janet (Jane Curtin), who allows a select trio of people to participate as long as they adhere to her rules. Among them are Sally (Loretta Devine), who is a brighter version of the “Golden Girls'” sweet-natured Rose, and Margot (Ann-Margret), who is a sweeter version of the “Golden Girls'” man-hungry Blanche. Whether it’s Mr. Right #6 or Mr. Right Now, Margot is always on the lookout for Mr. Right. Her current focus is on Arthur (Christopher Lloyd), who is extremely popular with the ladies despite sporting a toupee that has been described as looking like a muskrat had died on his bald head.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Queen Bees quiz.

Because Helen is only staying for a month, she does not take Janet’s insults seriously and reminds everyone that she is only there for one month. In the meantime, however, when a fourth member of the group passes away and Sally requests that Helen join them as a bridge partner, Helen can’t say no to the opportunity to play a game she knows she is good at or the opportunity to challenge Janet’s dominance. However, this is not a film about shrewd one-upmanship between women. The second half of the film is more concerned with Helen’s blossoming romance with a dashing newcomer named Dan, who arrives on the scene (James Caan).

Seeing professionals like Burstyn create layered, appealing characters out of thinly written, predictably written material is a pleasure to watch. Her scenes with Barnes are easy and natural, as they trade favorite quotes from a diverse range of sources, citing Nelson Mandela, coach Lou Holtz, and Miley Cyrus, among others. It also helps that she looks like a million bucks in a series of soigné gowns courtesy of costume designer Cynthia Flynt, which accentuate Helen’s confidence and impeccable style to an even greater extent.

Within the context of a scene in which she and Helen are sharing a joint, Devine’s semi-improvised discussion of her very impressive but not entirely natural hair is a delight. And Ann-Margret speaks fondly of her five husbands (“And the last two were wealthy!”), that it’s easy to see why someone would want to be husband number six. There is also a certain amount of zing in the dialogue. Frances Stewart (reuniting with his “Third Rock” co-star Curtin) describes Laura’s mother to the manager of Pine Gardens: “She burns the majority of her calories by squinting and rolling her eyes.”

About the quiz

With obvious jokes about aches and pains and Viagra (apparently it’s okay to sexually objectify someone when you’re old), among other things, “Queen Bees” touches gently and sympathetically on the inevitable challenges of aging, including the loss of loved ones as well as the loss of independence as well as cancer, stroke, and dementia. Helen reflects on “what passes for okay at this age” with a wistful tone. However, the film’s lesson is that it is our connections, both old and new, that allow what passes for okay to be actually quite good at times.
