Action star Liam Neeson and director Jaume Collet-Serra have crafted their most satisfying work to date by adhering to a tried-and-true crime movie template, and allowing a talented cast and tight production values to be the only high concept they need. They did this by eschewing the convoluted high concepts of works such as “Unknown” (amnesia!) and “Non-Stop” (one flight!). Instead, they relied on a straightforward The movie “Run All Night” isn’t perfect, but it’s surprisingly satisfying on its own terms. It’s elevated by a better-than-average ensemble and some razor-sharp editing that cuts through any nagging questions about the plot. Neeson gets to portray a real character here, which is something he hasn’t been given the opportunity to do in any other film directed by Collet-Serra before this one. This character is a man who may have once had a specific set of skills, but those skills have been dulled by age, regret, and whiskey. “Run All Night” is evidence that high-quality action movies don’t really need to “reinvent the wheel” each time out as long as they make it spin this smoothly, which is exactly what “Run All Night” does.

In the past, Jimmy Conlon, played by Neeson, was known for being a notorious mob enforcer. If he knocked on your door, you immediately knew that trouble was on the way. Conlon doesn’t have much reason to keep living after it was rumored that he was responsible for more than a dozen murders at the behest of the notorious Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris). He is the guy who wakes up the next morning in the bar and just starts drinking again. He is forced to beg Shawn’s son Danny (Boyd Holbrook) for money and drunkenly play Santa Claus at the Maguire Christmas party. He is also forced to play Santa Claus at the Maguire Christmas party. The once-dreaded man is now openly made fun of by a subsequent generation of criminals who are younger and more hardened. In addition, Jimmy is completely cut off from communicating with his son Mike (Joel Kinnaman), who is attempting to lead a normal life by working as a limo driver with his wife (Genesis Rodriguez) and two children (with a third on the way).

Editor’s Picks

The first act of “Run All Night” follows the journeys of two sons: one son is attempting to flee the criminal underworld, while the other son is immersing himself in it to the greatest extent possible. Boyd Holbrook, an extremely talented actor, plays the role of Danny, a dangerous sociopath who seems capable of doing whatever it takes to gain the respect of his father through criminal notoriety. Danny exudes a twitchy, nervous energy, and he is the kind of dangerous sociopath who is all twitchy and nervous energy. In order to accomplish this, he introduces heroin into their world. Even if Mom is against it, Albanian heroin dealers don’t like it when they’re cut out of a potential business opportunity. It just so happens that the dealers hire Mike to drive them to a meeting with Danny, and for some reason, that meeting ends up being a disaster. Mike is a target for everyone in the criminal underworld, including a high-priced assassin played with effective cool by Common, and only his estranged father can keep him safe until morning. Before you know it, Danny is dead, and Mike is a target of everybody in the criminal underworld.

Neeson delivers what is arguable the best performance of his action career in this film. He portrays a man who does not simply spring back to life as a killing machine, but rather has the muscle memory to complete the mission one more time. Jimmy may have trouble navigating the subway tunnels, but when it comes down to it, he can still choke a man to death and hit his target every time. Because he doesn’t let the potential melodrama seep into his portrayal of the character, the actor manages to avoid falling into the trap of the commonplace trope of the criminal’s journey to redemption. His perspective on Jimmy is that he is a man who is doing what needs to be done, not necessarily to make amends for wrongs done in the past, but rather because there is nothing else for him to do at this point. A pleasant surprise comes from watching Neeson and Harris in scenes together, particularly a fantastic and tense encounter that takes place in the middle of the piece. They are both great in this situation because neither one of them overplays the archetype of the hero or the villain. The “good guy,” Jimmy, is a murderer, and the “bad guy,” Shawn, is emotionally mourning the loss of his child. Jimmy is the “good guy,” and Shawn is the “bad guy.” They are significantly more complicated than they would have been if other actors had been in charge of them.

“Run All Night” also benefits from having a first-rate crew working behind the camera, most notably editor Craig McKay, who has been nominated for an Academy Award twice before for his work on “Reds” and “The Silence of the Lambs.” To be fair, there is a bit of a sag in the middle of “Run All Night,” and the entire piece runs too long at nearly two hours. Nevertheless, “Run All Night” hums for at least an hour. However, take note of the way in which McKay and Collet-Serra orchestrate a great sequence in a subway station by creating a rhythm between the police officers trying to find Mike and the bad guys coming after Jimmy. This is something that you should pay attention to. Or, consider the fantastic car chase scene, which, like a few of the fight scenes, is filmed in an excessive amount of close-up, but has a visceral pace to it that makes it impossible to look away from the screen. Watch one of the final sequences that takes place in a train yard and notice how everything fits together so perfectly to create tension. There is a beat that plays throughout “Run All Night” that really serves as the entertaining foundation of the whole film, and it’s something that so many other action movies that are boring lack.

Although viewers should be warned that this work does not shy away from extreme violence at times, there are parts of “Run All Night” that don’t make a lot of sense, and I wished that some of its darker beats had a little more grit and a little less polish. When you choose to set a shootout in an Irish bar to the music of The Pogues, you walk a fine line between entertaining the audience and being a bit too obvious about it; however, by that time, the movie had already won me over. And when you get to that point, you really know that an action movie has been successful overall; that is, when its flaws are beaten down by what works like the guys who choose to cross Jimmy Conlon.
