“Run the Race” does a good job of avoiding the pitfalls that plague so many faith-based films these days. It has higher production values than we are accustomed to seeing, as well as some pleasing, understated performances and—at least until the end—an unusual lack of melodrama, which is refreshing. Veterans such as Frances Fisher, Mykelti Williamson, and Mario Van Peebles lend gravitas to the film, which otherwise would have relied on the film’s appealing young stars for emotional heft. Moreover, “Run the Race” director/co-writer Chris Dowling imbues his sports drama with a grungy sense of place, giving the film the feel of a Christian version of “Friday Night Lights.”
However, things quickly spiral out of control during the film’s insane third act, which includes some truly unfortunate crosscutting during a moment of intense emotional climax. It also takes some unexpected turns and ties up some loose ends in a way that is so implausibly unbelievable that it serves as a distraction.
“Run the Race,” on the other hand, is a pleasant surprise until then. As one might expect, Tim Tebow’s first foray into producing is an inspirational sports drama with a heavy dose of religious inspiration, which is fitting given his status as a football superstar. When it comes to their faith journeys, the characters in the screenplay written by Dowling, Jake McEntire, and Jason Baumgardner have a tendency to express everything they’re thinking and feeling verbatim. However, the characters’ discussions about their personal relationships with Jesus may be of interest to those who are still on the fence about whether or not to believe in Christ.

Tanner Stine plays Zach Truett, a star high school football player and the closest thing to a celebrity in the fictional small town of Bessemer, Florida. Truett is played by Tanner Stine, who also stars in the film. Zach appears to have it all on the surface: good looks, a swaggering charisma, and natural athletic abilities. But Zach is hiding something. Zach, on the other hand, is doubting God’s plan for his life, as is so often the case in faith-based films. For the past couple of years, he and his younger (and more devout) brother, Dave (Evan Hofer), have been living by themselves in their ramshackle home in the poorest section of this crumbling town’s deteriorating neighborhood. Their mother passed away from cancer, and their absent father (Kristoffer Polaha) has been drinking away the pain ever since the loss of their mother. Although Dowling’s fluid camerawork effectively depicts the bleakness of Bessemer, with its boarded-up shops and beat-up cars, his use of country music is a little too heavy-handed at times.

But Zach, an athletic running back who’s on the verge of leading his team to the state championship, knows that football will provide an escape for him and Dave from their problems. (You will be surprised to learn that he has set his sights on the University of Florida, where Tebow was a two-time national champion and winner of the Heisman Trophy.) Eddie George, a former NFL star, appears in a small role as a scout who is interested in him.) Dave, on the other hand, is suffering from an illness that threatens to derail their plans, which is among the difficulties the brothers are experiencing.

Allowing for some spoilers, suffice it to say that Zach and Dave try to lift each other up and out of their many tribulations through sports, and, increasingly, faith. This is because some of the story’s convoluted twists are truly bonkers. Fisher, the boys’ godmother, who also happens to be the owner of the grocery store where they work, brings grace and calm to the proceedings. As the tough-love football coach (who also coaches the track team, which becomes an oddly crucial plot point), Williamson is played by Van Peebles, who somehow manages to make his Sunday sermons comment on exactly what is going on in the characters’ lives.
About the quiz
Although much of it sounds like a cliched formula, “Run the Race” has enough of a shaggy, low-key likability that it makes you wish it were more enjoyable. With his heartthrob screen presence and easy charm, Stine is especially endearing in his flirty exchanges with Kelsey Reinhardt, the pious, young nursing assistant who cares for him after he suffers an injury in the film. In addition, his rage and inquisition are understandable, and his rebellious streak is understandable. He is naturally tamed and simplified in the film, which is understandable. In a similar vein, Hofer’s portrayal of the saintly younger brother is almost too good to be true.

What little goodwill the film may have engendered is completely destroyed by the film’s intensely soapy conclusion, which is more likely to elicit unintentional laughter than to elicit tears. And the conclusion is self-congratulatory to the point of being amusing. However, for a brief period of time, “Run the Race” may have appeared to be a minor miracle.
