It’s no longer groundbreaking to consider the dangers of screen addiction in today’s world; stating that “overdependence on electronic devices is harmful” is almost as cliche as stating that “smoking is bad for you.” “Save Yourselves!” is a contemporary relationship comedy disguised as a modest apocalyptic farce, and the writers/directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson’s debut feature “Save Yourselves!” shows little interest in stating what everyone already knows. Instead, this gleefully high-concept and defiantly low-budget two-hander argues that we would be better off holding on to our mobile screens for the time being, albeit in moderation, for the foreseeable future. To get information in case of an emergency, so that we don’t walk into a catastrophic situation in a rapidly changing world completely unprepared and shocked, like Jared Leto did when he emerged into a post-lockdown Covid-19 reality back in March.

In “Save Yourselves!,” the central characters, a pair of endearing Brooklyn hipsters, decide to go cold turkey with their phones at the worst possible time: on the day that humankind would lose their claim to the planet due to a bizarre alien invasion, they find themselves in exactly that situation. “Big” is the millennial version of the classic film “Big,” and it stars Su (Sunita Mani) and Jack (John Reynolds). They are a couple with such wide-eyed and innocent-looking eyes that you’d think they accidentally grew into their adult bodies in their own millennial version of the classic film “Big.” Su is trapped in a job that is both unfulfilling and abusive. Jack, on the other hand, is into new-agey pursuits such as clinging to a piece of crystal for good luck, among other things. Moreover, both of them are a little too preoccupied with their touch-screens and browser tabs to the point where virtual connection has come to mean detachment and disengagement everywhere else, including in their romantic relationship, which clearly means a lot to both of them. The question is: How exactly are they going to “become better people” and be more present for one another?

Editor’s Picks

In an unexpected turn of events, the couple is rescued by a week-long off-the-grid getaway to the country; an impromptu getaway during which the couple agrees not to use their phones. Instead, they’d spend their time rediscovering their intimacy, reconnecting with nature, and, in Jack’s case, making sourdough starter from scratch; an endeavor that will feel all too familiar to the chronic bakers who have been forced to endure the ongoing quarantine. Unfortunately for Su and Jack, ominously murderous extraterrestrials have been taking over the world and have even made their way into the idyllic woods where they are vacationing, ignoring messages from their friends and family members.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Save Yourselves quiz.

Perhaps because scaring these endearing individuals with sharp-jawed, bloodsucking, and gut-munching creatures would be too cruel, “Save Yourselves!” uses an adorable alien design instead of the more frightening ones. Before we know it, small pouffe-like brutes that resemble curled up plush porcupines or cuddly hedgehogs appear all over the place, looking so adorable that one’s natural instinct would be to pick them up and hug them instead of fleeing for one’s life. But, before the fuzzy fur-balls take over their domain in earnest and “Save Yourselves!” takes an adventurous turn towards a survival narrative, Su and Jack engage in earthly resolves, attempting to resurrect what appears to be missing in their relationship, and even confessing their deepest embarrassments to one another in the process. Jack claims that he doesn’t feel manly enough because he doesn’t know anything about plumbing and fishing. In contrast, Su acknowledges that she has been eating her disposable contacts for years, after her initial naive curiosity turned into a habit.

Save Yourselves Quiz

Because of these sincere scenes between the childlike duo, combined with standard-issue hipster humor such as mason jars and vegan meals, the filmmakers manage to keep the disarming edge of “Save Yourselves!” even when the running time feels stretched and the one-note concept becomes a little too trite. Fischer and Wilson’s sparse and curiously asexual material doesn’t quite reach the existential depths of Charlie McDowell’s “The One I Love,” another modern-day and sci-fi-adjacent study of domestic partnerships, but Mani and Reynolds’ chemistry keeps the proceedings light and lively. Ending on a hopeful note, you come to care about this couple and sincerely hope that they will outlive the end of the world, both within their marriage and out in the vanishing world.

It will be up to you to make sense of the story’s underwhelming conclusion, which is a tepid conclusion that both abandons the plot and sadly demonstrates how the film’s limited resources can’t keep up with the premise’s sci-fi ambitions. In spite of this, the whole thing has a sweet heart that is eager to win you over with its good nature. In the midst of today’s gloom, that sweetness seems almost extraterrestrial.
