Professor Laura Crane of Blackmore University is catfished by her student Jason Carvey, who leads her outside a bar in New York City and murders her while wearing a Ghostface costume, one year after the Woodsboro crimes carried out by Richie Kirsch and Amber Freeman[a]. In order to complete the “movie” that Richie and Amber wanted to make, Jason concocts a plan with his roommate Greg to murder sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter. Jason gets a call from a different Ghostface, who informs him that Greg has been killed. Jason is then fatally stabbed by this Ghostface. In addition to attending Blackmore University with other survivors Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin, their roommate Quinn Bailey, Mindy’s lover Anika Kayoko, and Chad’s roommate Ethan Landry, Sam and Tara now reside in New York City. Sam sees Dr. Stone for treatment, but she is shunned in public due to an online hoax claiming she was really behind the most recent murders. Sam is summoned for questioning by Detective Wayne Bailey, Quinn’s father, because her ID and a Ghostface mask from last year’s attacks were discovered at the scene of Jason’s murder. Sam receives a call from Ghostface on Richie’s phone when they are on their way to the station. Sam then attacks Tara and kills a number of onlookers while leaving behind another Ghostface mask used in the 2011 Woodsboro killings.

The sisters meet FBI special agent Kirby Reed, a survivor of the 2011 killings, at the station. Sam and Tara also run into reporter Gale Weathers, who they dislike for basing a book on their experiences. She reveals that following the recent attacks, Sidney Prescott and her family have fled to safety. Ghostface kills Dr. Stone after stealing Sam’s paperwork and leaving behind a mask used in the Hollywood crimes. Mindy hypothesizes that the murderer is adhering to the conventions of movie franchises, particularly the convention that anyone can pass away while the property is still active. Danny, Sam’s boyfriend, observes Ghostface shooting Quinn in Sam and Tara’s apartment from his window before attacking the crowd and throwing Anika from a ladder to her death below, leaving behind a mask used in the Windsor College murders. Ghostface then attacks the gathering. Following Quinn’s passing, Wayne is formally removed from the investigation, but he makes a promise to aid the group and exact revenge on his daughter. Gale leads the gang to an abandoned theater that she discovered while conducting research that has been turned into a shrine to the Ghostface assailants, complete with gear from each round of attacks. Chad is attacked by two Ghostfaces who appear. With their weapons drawn, Kirby and Wayne show up as Tara and Sam try to flee. Wayne shoots Kirby, revealing himself as a third Ghostface and the mastermind. His children, Ethan and a still-alive Quinn, are his accomplices.
