When it comes to dog shows, “Show Dogs” is essentially the equivalent of “Miss Congeniality,” and if that doesn’t sound like your cup of kibble, well… you’d be right.

Show Dogs is a mediocre comedy even by the low standards of this type of live-action, family-friendly comedy, and it is particularly mediocre by those standards. That it will be released in theaters at all is actually quite remarkable in and of itself. It smells like the kind of material you’d find in the bargain bin of your local soulless superstore under the merciless fluorescent lights, from the barely there characters to the cheesy visual effects to the flat attempts at knowingly corny laughs. It is, without a doubt, a gloomy situation. Your family is deserving of better treatment.

Editor’s Picks

“Show Dogs” isn’t attempting to be the kind of intelligently written, emotionally poignant offering that we’ve come to expect from Pixar Animation, or even DreamWorks Animation, for example. Raja Gosnell, who previously directed a couple of “Smurfs” movies, as well as a couple of “Scooby-Doo” movies and “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” is the director of this film. A talking-dog beauty pageant film is right up his alley, but it’s also a lot more insufferable than its high-concept premise would lead you to believe.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Show Dogs quiz.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not a film aficionado. My appetite is whetted for a good live-action, talking-animal film. It isn’t even necessary for it to be an Oscar-worthy film like “Babe” to qualify. “Cats & Dogs” is a good example of how something sufficiently snappy and ridiculous looking can be a lot of fun if it’s lively and a little subversive. This, on the other hand, is not the case.

According to the script written by Max Botkin and Marc Hyman, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges will provide the voice of Max, a police canine unit assigned to the New York City Department of Investigation. When the gruff Rottweiler accidentally crosses paths with Will Arnett’s Frank Mosley, an FBI agent who is also working on the case, he botches a sting operation involving an endangered baby panda and ends up in the hospital.

The two must work together to go undercover at an exclusive dog show in Las Vegas, where the smuggled panda is expected to be sold to an evil exotic animal collector. Despite their initial animosity, the two must work together to go undercover at the show. (In case you’re wondering how things work logistically, Frank only hears barking, whereas we hear Max and the other dogs conversing with one another.) On “Family Guy,” it’s similar to the conceit with Stewie, except that the dialogue is never clever.

About the quiz

Although Max isn’t quite ready to dazzle the judges with his charisma, he is eerily similar to Sandra Bullock’s all-business FBI agent in “Miss Congeniality.” First and foremost, he must go through the obligatory makeover and arduous training alongside Frank, who is reluctantly serving as his handler. That is where Natasha Lyonne comes in, playing the thankless and personality-free role of Mattie, a seasoned dog groomer. Natasha Lyonne plays Mattie in the film. In this episode, there are some hilarious bathtub fart jokes and a running gag about Max’s displeasure with Frank reaching for his furry nether regions. Aside from Philippe (voiced by a seriously overqualified Stanley Tucci), Max meets and befriends several other canine characters on the dog-show circuit, including the flamboyant, French-accented Papillion Philippe (voiced by a seriously overqualified Stanley Tucci); the perky pug Sprinkles (Gabriel Iglesias), who is mostly there for sight gags involving various shades of sunglasses and other such things; a haughty Yorkie Additionally, “Show Dogs” forces a rushed romance between Max and a fluffy Australian shepherd named Daisy (Jordin Sparks), which serves absolutely no purpose.

The film “Show Dogs” attempts to incorporate numerous pop-culture references to entertain the adults in the audience in between all of the wacky canine antics (which are aimed squarely at young children who, theoretically, won’t recognize how poorly they’re rendered through uncomfortably jumpy digital effects). From Max’s love of hip-hop to a throwaway line that acknowledges the fact that Arnett also provides the voice of Lego Batman, there’s something for everyone here. They never have a good sense of humour. Not even a crack-a-faint-smile-worthy joke.

The show, however, is ultimately driven by the desire to be about something after all of this frantic nonsense. It aspires to communicate a message and to have a soul. Is it possible for Max to save the panda while also winning the dog show? Will he and Frank be able to come to terms, and perhaps even form a friendship, in the end? Will you be able to sit through the entire movie without looking at your phone because you’re getting bored? These are the types of softball questions that are thrown at pageant queens, both human and canine.
