“Sisters,” directed by Brian De Palma, was made more or less consciously as an homage to Alfred Hitchcock, but it takes on a life of its own and is a charming little mystery film in the process. The opening sequence is classic Hitchcock. The film begins with events that are so commonplace that they are almost insignificant, and the horror of the situation is revealed only gradually as the film progresses. During a game show called “Peeping Tom,” which asks the question, “What would you do if you were accidentally made a voyeur-for-a-day?” a lithe fashion model and a young newspaper reporter come face to face with each other. The prize for her winning is a set of stainless steel cutlery, and the prize for him winning is dinner for two at a supper club. They meet and decide they like each other.
They spend the night together after having several encounters with a mysterious stranger who may or may not be her ex-husband, and he is brutally knifed to death the following morning. And, no, I haven’t given too much away about the plot so far. Due to the fact that there are a few complications. For example, the girl is one-half of a famous set of Siamese twins who are related to the actress. But her sister isn’t nice at all, despite the fact that she’s the nice one.
Another character is a young girl newspaper reporter, a kind of feminist Lois Lane, who lives across the courtyard from the crime scene and witnesses it (a la “Rear Window”). They are not happy about a recent series of exposes she has written, so she calls the police. Moreover, when they go to the alleged murder apartment, they discover no blood, no body, and no evidence of a crime; all they find is the sweet young fashion model.

I’m not sure how much more I can say about the plot without giving away some of De Palma’s pleasant surprises. While the film’s twists and turns and complications are entertaining, it is ultimately successful due to the performances of its cast. With Margot Kidder and Jennifer Salt, De Palma has cast two of the few exceptions in a movie industry rife with young actresses who look great but can’t act as well (especially when they’re asked to play intelligent characters).

However, Jennifer Salt is the bigger surprise because she comes across as a tough, stubborn, and doggedly persistent outsider who is believable in her role. It’s a classic Hitchcock role in every way. He believes she is completely innocent and uninvolved, and that she is in possession of information that no one will believe. She has no reason to doubt the evidence she has in front of her, but the police are suspicious of her, the body has vanished, and the killer knows who she is and where she is.

De Palma directs with a good sense of humor and a good sense of the absurd. There’s Ms. Salt’s delightful suburban mother (Mary Davenport), for example, who wishes her daughter would stop writing those newspaper columns and settle down in a nice, comfortable marriage every now and then. There’s also the enigmatic stranger (Bill Finley), who appears to be a cross between an extraterrestrial and a Cold War operative. And then there’s the other sister, the other Siamese twin, about whom it’s probably best not to say anything at all at this point.
