‘Skyscraper,’ the latest Dwayne Johnson summer blockbuster, has a signature promotional image that features the charismatic blockbuster star hanging only by his left hand from a soaring building. It’s his wedding ring that stands out prominently in the foreground, glistening in the light of the deadly blaze that’s engulfing him.

In the same way that his earnest intensity in his eyes draws our attention, the ring draws our attention as well, serving as a reminder that, like the “Fast & Furious” franchise, in which Johnson plays a prominent role, this story is about #family. Most of all, it’s a mindless mash-up of “Die Hard” and “The Towering Inferno”: just intense enough to provide a much-needed diversion, just lightweight enough to make you forget about it as soon as it’s over and forget about it again. It’s not particularly “good,” per se, but it accomplishes what it sets out to do in terms of making us feel uncomfortable, which makes it… successful?

Editor’s Picks

Although Rawson Marshall Thurber has attempted the difficult task of simultaneously making you feel good about bravery and resilience while also making you feel nothing about the countless bodies that are blown to pieces in a hail of automatic gunfire, his film is a failure. Many, many people are killed needlessly in this PG-13 spectacle, perhaps in the name of entertainment or thrills? What is the process of character development? Clearly, the international gang of criminals who take over a Hong Kong high-rise – the world’s tallest building, three times the size of the Empire State Building – are a particularly heinous bunch. Having them burst into people’s offices and completely demolish them—while the camera stays away from the bloodshed in accordance with MPAA guidelines—seems unnecessary.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Skyscraper quiz.

You’re not here to contemplate, on the other hand. You’re here to have a good time, and “Skyscraper” certainly delivers on that promise with its numerous dizzying and death-defying action sequences. It’s the connective tissue that holds all of the daring stunts together that’s frail.

But first, let’s take a trip back in time ten years. A hostage negotiation that goes horribly wrong puts Johnson’s Will Sawyer in charge of it. Sawyer is a highly trained Marine and FBI agent who is played by Johnson (another instance of placing characters in the midst of jarring, over-the-top violence). Will, who was injured in the explosion and lost his left leg below the knee, now works as a consultant in the security industry. With his wife, Sarah (Neve Campbell), and their twin children (McKenna Grace and Noah Cottrell), he travels to Hong Kong for his latest job, where he is tasked with evaluating the safety of The Pearl before it opens to the public. It is the creation of billionaire Zhao Long Ji, and it is a gleaming, self-contained city that stretches 200 stories or more into the sky (Chin Han). It takes place in a crowded room with characters exchanging painfully clunky expository dialogue, all of which will be relevant later on when the building’s numerous high-tech features are revealed.

However, this will not be the case for long. Thurber isn’t particularly concerned with gradually building tension in his stories. “Skyscraper” gets rolling right away and doesn’t let up until the end of the film. Kores Botha (Roland Moller) leads a team of villains who have broken into the house with highly flammable chemicals in order to steal the most McGuffiny of McGuffins. The villains are led by the menacing Kores Botha (Roland Moller). In fact, they shouldn’t have bothered to explain it at all because the item in question is so disproportionately insignificant in comparison to the mayhem it causes.) However, when they set fire to the building, they are unaware that Will’s wife and children are still residing in one of the residential units. Moreover, as the flames ascend from what began as a thin, orange line on the 96th floor, the danger and the level of insanity increase along with them.

About the quiz

Of course, because it is Johnson who is portraying this character, he will go to any length to save them, with each new obstacle that he encounters posing a more ridiculous challenge than the one that came before it. However, what’s novel about Johnson in this role is that he isn’t completely impenetrable to harm or destruction. In the film, his character is given a prosthetic leg, which is cleverly used as an advantage rather than an impediment.

Each scene is notable for its own reasons; for example, the staggeringly overqualified Robert Elswit (Paul Thomas Anderson’s usual cinematographer) places us right in the middle of the raging chaos. Exhilarating set pieces include Will’s ascent to the top of a 100-story crane and his daring leap across the night sky to reach The Pearl through a broken window. He uses duct tape to A) patch up his wounds before B) placing it on his hands and feet in order to Spider-Man his way across the glass exterior of a building. It is possible that this will not be the breezy escape you are looking for this summer if you suffer from vertigo or have even the slightest fear of heights. It’s one of the more enjoyable aspects of “Skyscraper”—and this was also true of “Die Hard”—that it makes us feel as if we’re figuring out the plan with the far more capable hero on the screen, rather than the other way around. (Though my son turned to me about three-fourths of the way through the screening and said, “I can’t believe it all happened in one day.”)

Sarah Campbell has a surprising amount of screen time in “Skyscraper,” and she never comes across as a helpless damsel in distress; instead, she is a combat-trained surgeon who is capable of kicking her own buttocks while also caring for her children. In addition, she is fluent in several Asian languages, which comes in handy throughout the movie. Consider the possibility that she is the one tasked with saving the day, as well as her family and the entire building. That would be a thrilling experience for sure.
