A musical about… totalitarianism, according to the plot of “Smallfoot.”
This may sound like a wildly contradictory concept. Although it is a family-friendly film, “Over the Hedge,” directed and co-written by Karey Kirkpatrick (“Over the Hedge”) and co-directed by Jason Reisig (“Over the Hedge”), is surprising in its progressive foundation. We just wish the dialogue and visuals were as daring as the ideology it was promoting.
There are a number of screenwriters involved, including the duo of John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, who have made waves in the past, most notably with the influential “Bad Santa.” The book “Smallfoot” encourages children to think for themselves. To call into question everything they’ve been taught. To put one’s foot in one’s mouth. There are yetis living on a mountaintop society where the rules are literally carved into stone and must be followed at all costs or else they will be expelled. The song “Smallfoot” could be interpreted as a critique of the oppressive nature of government, religion, or a combination of the two. A bold and exciting thematic choice for a film targeted at mainstream audiences of all ages, and one that should be applauded.
Ah, but there’s a problem with that. “Smallfoot” is intended for a broad range of mainstream audiences of all ages, which means it must be palatable on a broad scale. Because of this blandly pleasing appearance, and because of the antics’ familiar “Looney Tunes” squash-and-stretch aesthetic, and because the songs are reminiscent of those heard in previously successful animated films, the film is a resounding success. In many ways, the opening sequence is a near-exact recreation of the jubilant “Everything Is Awesome” theme from the beginning of “The LEGO Movie” (although the song that accompanies it is not nearly as insanely catchy). Later on, the upbeat chase music that plays throughout the film brings to mind the upbeat score from the “Despicable Me” movies.

Channing Tatum lends his voice to Migo, a sunny, furry beast who is essentially a yeti version of Chris Pratt’s LEGO construction worker, Emmet. Migo is voiced by Channing Tatum. He starts his day in a positive manner, enthusiastic about the smallest of details and joining his neighbors in singing a song about how “we like living this way.” Migo’s father, Dorgle (Danny DeVito), is tasked with the responsibility of bringing the giant, orange snail that travels across the sky to the village’s attention each morning. He accomplishes this by slingshotting himself through the air and striking a gong with his head, as seen in the film. (You may be more familiar with this as the sun rising.)
Everyone does his or her job and remains in his or her assigned location. Do as you’re told, blend in, and always keep your eyes on the stones: These are some of the most important guiding principles in this society. The most powerful of them all is the Stonekeeper (Common), who wears the rules as a massive vestment made of individually carved rocks and appears to be benevolent towards all. Any knowledge of the outside world is acquired in fragments that are difficult to comprehend; for example, a roll of toilet paper is mistaken for “The Scroll of Invisible Wisdom,” a ski pole is mistaken for a horn, and a down jacket is mistaken for a pelt. It’s yet another rip-off of “The LEGO Movie,” in which everyday household items are transformed into mysterious creatures.

However, one day, when he gets lost, Migo comes across a Smallfoot—a human who has crashed his plane into the snow-capped mountains near the yetis’ home and landed in the yetis’ territory. Each has heard legends about the other and is frightened of the other’s appearance. One of the film’s more consistently amusing moments is the way each character hears the other’s voice through a distorted lens. In reality, the yeti is just trying to have a pleasant conversation; the human, on the other hand, comes across as squeaky and skittery when he’s attempting to be calm and collected in his approach.

Meanwhile, Percy (James Corden), a wildlife TV host based in a town at the foot of the Himalayas, is desperately attempting to save his career by staging a confrontation with a yeti. When Migo shows up, following his newfound curiosity, he doesn’t have to keep up the pretense for very long. From there, “Smallfoot” follows the unlikely friendship that develops between the two characters, as well as the ways in which it contributes to the growth of both characters’ understanding. A rap-karaoke version of Queen and David Bowie’s iconic “Under Pressure” is included, which is regrettably a bad choice.
A second character who comes along to help Migo broaden his horizons is Meechee (Zendaya), the Stonekeeper’s daughter, a strong-willed, scientifically-minded young woman who’s been secretly daring to think for herself her entire life. The character of Gwangi, a hulking purple-hued beast with a heart of gold, is voiced by LeBron James, a rising actor and former basketball player in his early 20s. Despite this, most of the characters are identical in appearance, dressed in drab shades of cream and blue, and they are confined to repeating variations of the same lines over and over.

“Smallfoot,” on the other hand, is enthralling because of the way its characters increasingly challenge what they’ve been told is true their entire lives—even if the lies were concocted to keep them safe. When the Stonekeeper first sees a human with his own eyes, his immediate reaction is to deny, deny, and more denial.
