Wait, when did everyone get a “-verse” to include all of their intellectual property? I understand that the Marvel Cinematic Universe was created as a means of bringing together the various Marvel characters, and that the Spider-verse was created as a means of bringing the various alternate universe versions of Spider-Man into one story. In addition, we might question whether the game of “Who’s that?” among the hundreds of cosplaying real and virtual background figures is a significant distraction from what is happening in the movie.
There’s a lot going on in front of that Sgt. Pepper album cover-style collection, to be honest. “A New Legacy,” like the 1996 film “Space Jam,” which starred Michael Jordan, tells the story of a real-life basketball superstar who is transported into a cartoon world to compete in a high-stakes game. Rather than his real family, this time it’s LeBron James playing a slightly fictionalized version of himself (although the jabs about him switching teams are completely legitimate). A brief opening sequence featuring some of LeBron James’s most memorable moments from his professional basketball career serves to educate the two or three people in the audience who may be unfamiliar with his name and accomplishments. During the film, there is also a flashback to him as the child of a single mother in 1998 Akron, Ohio, where he is taught by his coach that if he wants to take advantage of the opportunities that basketball can provide for him, he must immerse himself in the game before ever stepping foot on the court. This lesson about concentration and total commitment will be reinforced later on.
In the present day, we get a close-up view of his opulent home and his two sons playing basketball on the court. Dom (Cedric Joe), the younger of the two sons, is having difficulty telling his father that he is less interested in playing basketball and more interested in creating computer games about basketball. He is almost finished with another that incorporates some moves from the pros as well as gamer enhancements such as style points and power-ups, among other things.

The list of screenwriters who have been credited is long enough for them to field their own basketball team. However, the cheekiness of portraying the bad guy as a content-creating corporate algorithm—based on previous content while advocating for individual creativity in a quasi-remake stuffed with infomercial-level self-promotion—does not prove to be as effective as they had hoped it would be. In spite of this, director Malcolm Lee achieves an excellent balance between the action and the family dynamics, as well as the Looney Tunes silliness, recognizing that the storyline revolves around the desire of a father and son for a better way to connect (while also appreciating their individual differences). This is a significant improvement over the original film, which was essentially an elevator pitch with slam dunks as the main attraction.
