In the same way that “National Lampoon’s European Vacation” was a perfectly enjoyable but inferior sequel to the genre-defining, zany ’80s comedy “Vacation,” “Spider-Man: Far From Home” changes the scenery but falls short of matching the inspired heights of its predecessor, “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

To be sure, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is a difficult film to follow in terms of quality. With Tom Holland in the title role, director Jon Watts’ 2017 film was a giddy blast of summertime air from New York City, a refreshing reboot that featured a hugely appealing performance from the actor. Also, “Far From Home” comes out about six months after the ground-breaking, Academy Award-winning animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which is perhaps the most inventive movie we’ve seen yet inspired by a Marvel comic—or any comic, for that matter—”Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

Editor’s Picks

Watts is back in the director’s chair, but this time he finds himself in the difficult position of directing a film that not only occupies a pivotal position within the ever-evolving Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also advances Peter Parker’s personal story in the process. Moreover, for a while, “Far From Home” is a great deal of fun, especially considering that it picks up right where “Avengers: Endgame” left off. Watts and his team, working from a script written by returning writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, explore what’s going on five years after Thanos’ fateful finger snap and how the world is reshaping in ways that are both major and minor in nature.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Spider Man Far From Home quiz.

In that regard, “Far From Home” works best as a high school comedy — something that also happened to be a strength of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” — with teens figuring out who they are and how to express themselves in this brave new world in an adorably awkward manner. While Peter has had a taste of the big time, complete with all of the excitement and responsibility that entails, he simply wants to be a typical adolescent. Rather than saving the world from total destruction, he’d rather go on a summer European adventure with his classmates—especially the darkly alluring MJ, played once again with humorous, deadpan charm by Zendaya—than save the world from total destruction. Again. Who could blame him, after all? It’s a lot—both for him and for the rest of us.

But the call of duty must be answered. Because it is an MCU blockbuster that will be released in theaters over the Fourth of July weekend, “Far From Home” must also function as a massive action spectacle, and this is where the film falls down the most. When it comes to the massive set pieces, and what the villain hopes to accomplish with them, the film is an empty but distracting swirl of chaos and noise. Certainly, that is the point, and we will get to more of that (without providing any spoilers, of course) in a moment. However, it all feels like an overload, like a swarm of soaring computer-generated blips swarming around you. “Far From Home” loses its way just as it’s supposed to be reaching its most exciting climax, and its greatest sin is that the scenes with the highest stakes are, on the whole, a little dull.

Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, is at the center of these confrontations, possessing a unique set of abilities that combine Iron Man’s flying and laser-zapping abilities with Thor’s sartorial tendencies. But, despite the fact that he initially presents himself as an ally and even a hopeful force for the future, the truth about who he is and what he wants isn’t much of a surprise. Gyllenhaal appears to be having a great time dressing up in this setting, and he brings a lot of wit to the scene in which he explains his (surprisingly understandable) reasoning for his elaborate plan, which he delivers with aplomb. The actual execution of it all, on the other hand, is a bit mind-numbing to watch. It is during the closing credits sequences that the real surprises are revealed, so make sure to remain seated until the very end.

About the quiz

The laughs are so consistent in the first half of the film that it’s hard not to wish that “Far From Home” was a straight-up romantic comedy instead. Peter’s wacky ideas about how MJ’s stops in Venice and Paris should go down are the stuff of moony teenage-boy fantasies, and they are hilarious. During a sweet, parallel romance, Peter’s wisecracking, scene-stealing best friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon), finds himself unexpectedly falling in love with the prim, Type-A Betty (Jennifer Garner) (Angourie Rice). Furthermore, a third romance, involving Tony Stark’s right-hand man, Happy (Jon Favreau), and Peter’s Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), has some potential but doesn’t go anywhere for the time being, despite the fact that it makes Peter’s Spidey sense tingle.

Holland isn’t given the opportunity to develop the depth of character that we’ve seen from him in the past—most notably during his heartbreaking exit from “Avengers: Infinity War” in 2015. His performance in the role is completely charming, as he brings an irresistible boyish enthusiasm to it that is a far cry from the ways Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield played him in previous iterations of the character. In fact, as he dodges calls from an increasingly, amusingly frustrated Nick Fury, Peter even gets to show glimmers of being a flaky kid (Samuel L. Jackson).

Perhaps his greatest superpower is the fact that he appears to be a more relatable, fully fleshed-out human being than any other character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which makes him stand out among the rest. We’ll almost certainly have a slew of opportunities to find out for certain.
