Will Smith voices an arrogant secret spy who mistakenly transforms into a pigeon and discovers he’s even better at his job in avian form in the animated “Spies in Disguise.” Sounds like a lot of fun for the whole family around the holidays, with a dependable and charming celebrity at the center. With Tom Holland providing the voice of the wonderfully wacky tech expert who is responsible for Smith’s makeover, the film is likely to become even more intriguing. Teaming up to confront evildoers are The Fresh Prince and Spider-Man: What’s not to appreciate about that?

Editor’s Picks

Sure, on a purely superficial, hedonistic level, you may enjoy the film from Blue Sky Animation, the studio behind the “Ice Age” trilogy. The colors are vivid, the lighting and shadows can be rather dramatic, and the mere thought of Will Smith as an irritated pigeon is amusing. But the film, directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane and based on a screenplay by Brad Copeland and Lloyd Taylor, may be about much more. With its bad guy (Ben Mendelsohn) threatening at a pivotal moment: “You hit me hard, I hit back harder,” “Spies in Disguise” might simply be making a comment on our severely broken times. If you’ve lately heard this term, it’s because it’s been President Trump’s guiding slogan since the beginning of time. (Trump, on the other hand, likes to boast he hits back ten times harder simply to be safe.) Also, you must try to play this Spies In Disguise Quiz.

Granted, animated films take a long time to create. When the makers of “Spies in Disguise” began working on the film, they couldn’t have predicted how polarized our society would become. (In fact, their film was inspired by a 2009 short film named “Pigeon: Impossible.”)

When it comes to global supervillains, it’s hard to overlook the fact that Smith’s Lance Sterling prefers to fight fire with fire, whereas Holland’s pacifist tech genius Walter Beckett prefers to make bombs that release glitter and “aww”-inducing images of kittens into the air. He wants to use his scientific intellect to unite people rather than divide them. “There are no good guys or bad guys,” Walter explains at one point. It’s only people.” Guess who’s philosophy comes out on top in the end? It appears to be a rather obvious message, or at the very least one that is important and necessary.

About the quiz

But it’s a very normal, globetrotting espionage story with exotic settings, fancy vehicles and gadgets, over-the-top action sequences, and mismatched buddy shenanigans that ties it all together. Even before Lance transforms into a winged version of himself, there are plenty of pratfalls for the younger viewers to enjoy. However, the film’s pacing takes a bit to get going, and it only truly picks up once Lance is accused of treason while on a mission in Japan. He turns to Walter, the dismissed underling who also happens to be the only person who can help him clear his record; Walter, in exchange, turns him into a pigeon as part of a disastrous experiment.

While he can’t drive his tricked-out, ultra sporty Audi without opposable thumbs, Lance discovers that he can still slip about unobserved in his feathered form. As Lance grudgingly joins other pigeons, with their goofy eyes, waddly walks, and fondness for regurgitation, “Spies in Disguise” takes on an appealingly off-kilter air. And the pigeons’ ability to perform marvels as a flock—to the point of being playfully militarized in the cause of good—is always inspiring.

Aside from Smith and Holland, who have good chemistry together, Rashida Jones, Reba McEntire, Karen Gillan, and Masi Oka round out the outstanding supporting voice ensemble. You could do a lot worse with your family after opening holiday gifts—and it might even give you something to talk about with relatives of various political stripes.
