The film “Spirit Untamed” is aimed squarely at eight-year-old girls who are horse enthusiasts. If you are one of these girls, you will fall into the narrow Venn diagram sliver that constitutes the ideal audience for the film.
It’s a harmless animated adventure that will serve as a harmless diversion for young viewers looking for something to do. These people are unlikely to notice that the film makes a waste of the talents of an incredible cast, which includes Julianne Moore, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Andre Braugher. Perhaps they don’t even remember the better movie that could have been made with Isabela Merced, Marsai Martin, and Mckenna Grace in the lead roles as three fearless equestriennes in the Wild West. They, on the other hand, deserve better.
This sorta-sequel, sorta-reboot takes its cues from the 2002 film “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron” as well as the Netflix series “Spirit Riding Free,” which serves as a sort of inspiration for the film. In “Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” Merced plays the plucky, tween character of Lucky Prescott, whose given name is Fortuna. She is also the star of the surprisingly hilarious live-action “Dora and the Lost City of Gold.” The film follows her life as a city girl who has been living with her Aunt Cora (Moore) since the death of her mother, a well-known stunt rider, a decade earlier. Early on in the film, we get our first glimpse of the zany slapstick that serves as the film’s primary source of comedy, when a squirrel messes up Lucky’s wealthy grandfather’s announcement that he is running for governor. Cora is the focus of the majority of the tripping and smacking throughout the episode. In fact, the thought of Moore standing in a recording booth, yelping whoops and grunts into a microphone is extremely depressing.

However, it is during this particular Summer That Changed Everything that Lucky travels west with her aunt to visit her estranged father, Jim (Gyllenhaal), who lives in the small town where she was born, that everything changes. Lucky quickly bonds with a wild mustang, whom she refers to as Spirit, despite the fact that their relationship is understandably strained at first. In the course of the story, several characters point out that the horse has a lot of Spirit, which gives the horse his name. However, because Lucky’s mother, Milagro, died in a horse-riding accident, her father forbids her from riding any horse, let alone one that is as rambunctious as Lucky. A good example of the commonplace anthropomorphizing that occurs throughout director Elaine Bogan and co-director Ennio Torresan’s film is Spirit, who has a fierce and cunning personality. (The script was written by Kristin Hahn, Katherine Nolfi, and Aury Wallington, among others.)

The bond Lucky forms with the two new friends she meets in town provides an actual spark to “Spirit Untamed,” despite the fact that their connection is fairly basic in terms of its heart-warming nature (she feeds him apples, he allows her to get close to him). Prune (Martin) and Abigail (Grace) teach her the fundamentals of horsewomanship, and the three of them form a jovial and entertaining group. Yes, their primary goal in this location is to prevent a nefarious horse wrangler from stealing Spirit and his companions. Walton Goggins provides the voice for this evil character, which lets you know you’re dealing with a bad guy.) The kids, on the other hand, have a great time along the way, whether it’s singing a silly song while riding through the hills or giggling around a campfire while roasting marshmallows (or both). The fact that they are a diverse group of actresses is a thoughtful bonus, but it would have been wonderful to see these women in a more intelligent girl-power quest.

These scenes, which take place in wide-open spaces and contoured slot canyons, have the potential to be quite beautiful in their own right. Another example is the appeal of soft, pastel colors created by a brief burst of morning sunlight streaking through the window of a room here and there. However, the animation, particularly in the character design, is jumpy and overly simplistic in a way that is off-putting, particularly in the first act. Although it is a minor distraction, Lucky appears to be a brown-eyed version of Anna from the Disney film “Frozen.”
