Every Christmas, a group of heavenly spirits under the direction of Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet-to-Come aid in the discovery and redemption of one new human soul or “perp” (“That Christmas Morning Feelin'”). Despite being tempted by the promise of settling down and making up for his own failures in his previous existence, Present has been eligible for “retirement” for years but has chosen not to do so (“Present’s Lament”). The spirits run into Clint Briggs, a well-known and contentious media strategist, while searching for a new soul to save (“Bringin’ Back Christmas”). Present is focused on Briggs despite Marley’s insistence that he is “unredeemable,” as he thinks that Clint’s redemption could have a “ripple” impact and transform him into a force for good in the world. In order to be ready for the yearly visit, The Ghosts start a year-long investigation into Clint. (“Ripple”). As Christmas draws near, the Ghosts go to Clint’s office, where they see him ordering his niece Wren, who is running for class president, to post a video of her opponent Joshua that is unflattering and tank her marks. Kimberly, Clint’s assistant who discovered the video at Clint’s request, is tormented by guilt but eventually decides against quitting. (“The View from Here”). When Present, who is drawn to Kimberly, is suddenly able to see her, things become even more complicated. When Clint repeatedly interrupts Marley (“The Story of Your Life (Marley’s Haunt)”) and seduces the willing Past, the haunt rapidly deviates from its intended course and Present is forced to step in and take control. Present realizes that Clint’s case requires an unconventional approach, so Present takes Clint back into his own past where Present reveals that he was once Ebenezer Scrooge, the only other unredeemable soul to go through the program. Clint is dismissive of Present and resists his past memories, particularly those of his older sister Carrie who asked Clint to raise her daughter Wren while on her deathbed. Clint surmises that Present yearns for a happy family life himself with Kimberly (“The Story of Your Life (Clint’s Pitch)”), but Present dismisses this and instead shows him Joshua’s horrified response to Wren’s re-posting of his video. Present then finally gets Clint to relive his most painful memory: Carrie’s dying request to raise Wren, which Clint had refused and passed on. The two wake up in Clint’s apartment and Present, now mortal, asks Kimberly out on a date (“The View from Here (Riverwalk)”) before Clint is interrupted by Yet-to-Come. Returning to his apartment, Present is ecstatic and waits for Clint to receive his congratulations from the ghost crew, but is perplexed when they don’t show up. Clint and Present race to stop Wren from posting the video, but just as they catch up to her, Kimberly stops them, telling Clint that she convinced Wren not to do it, then quitting her job. Present, discouraged and convinced he is unredeemable, jumps in front of an oncoming bus to return to his job in the afterlife, but Clint shoves him out of the way, and just before the bus hits, time freezes, and the spirits arrive to congratulate Clint on achieving his redemption (“Do a Little Good”). However, whe Present jumps in front of the bus, the spirits arrive to tell Present that life is worth trying and offer his friendship. Several years later, Clint has taken on the role of the Ghost of Christmas Present and is dating Past; he is expanding the program to cover other holidays, take on more criminals every year, and has hired Carrie as part of the staff; he also frequently visits Present, who is now married to Kimberly and the father of their two children; and the friends continue to work together redeeming souls. The hotel manager from the Christmas tree gathering is revealed to be the following “perp” selected for redemption in a post-credit scene.
