Julianne Moore gives one of the most impressive performances of her career in “Still Alice,” which she elevates above the trappings of being a made-for-cable-television movie with a combination of power and grace that she brings to the role.
Given the depth and breadth of Moore’s filmography as well as her ability to consistently produce great work, this is no small feat. Moore has played a variety of roles, ranging from a porn star in “Boogie Nights” to an eccentric artist in “The Big Lebowski” to a frustrated housewife in “Far From Heaven” to her dead-on portrayal of Sarah Palin in HBO’s “Game Change.” Because she is so intelligent, perceptive, and instinctive as an actress, she never sings a note out of tune. She finds unexpected avenues into her character, which is a challenging role that requires her to show a mental decline that is both gradual and inherently internal. She does this by finding unexpected avenues into her character.
The character of Dr. Alice Howland, a respected professor of linguistics at Columbia University who discovers she is suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, is not elevated to the status of a goddess in the film “Still Alice,” which is a relief. The film’s co-directors and writers, Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland, don’t shy away from showing how the disease can slowly and terrifyingly take hold of a person, robbing her of her ability to communicate and connect with the outside world. In contrast to this, however, the adaptation of Lisa Genova’s novel does not feature a particularly nuanced or artistic telling of the story.

This is especially true when “Still Alice” is compared to a couple of recent films that have tackled the same territory: Sarah Polley’s eerie “Away From Her” and Michael Haneke’s unflinching “Amour.” Both of these films deal with the same subject matter. Flat lighting, frequent use of melancholy music, a heavy reliance on medium shots, and some awkward cutaways for reactions are all factors that contribute to the feeling that one is watching a somewhat workmanlike production that would be better suited for the small screen. However, the movie’s intentions are good, the message is important, and it will undoubtedly strike a chord with the millions of people whose loved ones have been affected by this cruel disease.

However, at the beginning of the movie, Alice has everything she could possibly want. It is her 50th birthday, and she is celebrating the occasion at a trendy restaurant in New York City with her doting family. Her husband, who is also a professor, toasts her as the most beautiful and intelligent person he has ever known. Her husband is played by Alec Baldwin, who is also a professor. She is successful, fashionable, content, and has a comfortable financial situation. She exudes an air of assuredness and mastery in all circumstances. But very quickly, the written word, which had captivated her throughout her entire life and served as the foundation for her professional endeavors, began to elude her. During her routine jog around campus, she starts to feel disoriented. She starts forgetting about appointments and misplacing things all around the house.

After consulting with a neurologist, it was determined that Alice suffers from an extremely uncommon form of Alzheimer’s disease, and that it is inherited. She is able to fool her own brain and take short cuts in order to conceal the symptoms of her illness, which is a fascinating feat given her high level of intellectual prowess. But in a very short amount of time, everything comes crashing down around her, and it is extremely difficult to watch. Moore conveys fear with her eyes or through slight shifts in the tone of her voice for the most part, which makes the moments when her character understandably snaps in panic really stand out in contrast. Moore plays it small for the most part.
About the quiz
The fact that a woman who is an expert in linguistics has difficulty articulating herself may seem like an obvious device, but it also contributes to the film’s sense of melancholy and frustration because Alice is all too familiar with the power of self-expression. The song “Still Alice” is about how she responds to her own deterioration, specifically how she continually reevaluates the situation and figures out how to deal with it. It’s refreshing that she doesn’t always do it with quiet dignity; sometimes she even uses the disease to manipulate those around her or get out of a social occasion she’d rather avoid. She has a condition that causes her to have difficulty speaking.

However, it is also about how her family responds in ways that she did not anticipate. Her oldest daughter, Anna, a proper and perfectly coifed lawyer who married well, doesn’t handle her mother’s illness as well as her youngest daughter, Lydia, a free-spirited young woman who has relocated to Los Angeles with aspirations of becoming an actress and is played by an excellent performance from Kristen Stewart. Anna is played by a stiff Kate Bosworth. (The middle child, a son who is played by Hunter Parrish and is also on the cusp of his own successful career as a physician, is also on the verge of achieving this.)
The fact that Glatzer was given a diagnosis of ALS in 2011 after a decade of working with his partner, Westmoreland, on independent films, including the critically acclaimed film “Quinceanera,” in 2006, adds to the poignancy of the situation. Surely, he is well aware of the struggle that it takes to continue to be creative while also maintaining his vitality. The fact that this is a personal story, told honestly, and full of hope, is ultimately what comes through with a great deal of clarity and shines through as the most prominent aspect.
