“Supernova” is a heartwarming story about two men who are deeply in love but who will soon find themselves unfamiliar with one another. One of them is aware that he is on the verge of entering the final stage of dementia, and that he is losing many of his abilities to comprehend what is going on in his environment. He will not be able to identify his husband’s face or name. The other man will not be confronted with the same difficulties, but the man he knew and loved will be, at the very least, no longer there. They will never be able to stop loving one another. The fact that we believe this final statement to be true is a testament to the excellent performances given by Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci, who both gave outstanding performances. It is mostly through silence that they convey the essence of a truly loving relationship between them. It’s a look or a touch that does it. The unfortunate fact is that, when they’re forced to speak, the dialogue sometimes sounds more like it’s coming from a writer than from a character, but there’s so much truth and compassion embedded throughout this entire production that the places where it stumbles can be forgiven.

Editor’s Picks

In this touching story, Harry Macqueen writes and directs the story of Sam (Colin Firth) and Tusker (Stanley Tucci), who have been partners for twenty years and whom we meet on a road trip across England (shot with luscious beauty by the great Dick Pope). They argue about directions and other minor issues early in the film, but there’s a heaviness in the air that lingers throughout the film. Tusker’s health is deteriorating, and he is well aware that things are only going to get worse. Tucci and Firth infuse Sam and Tusker from the very beginning of the film with something that so many of these cinematic partnerships lack: a sense of history. We believe Sam and Tusker are more than just actors in a scene, and that they have a real relationship. They have the impression of being people who are familiar with one another’s body language; people who are able to detect changes and emotional unrest in one another in ways that no one else can.

After further investigation, it is discovered that the road trip has several purposes, one of which is to reunite with old friends and family of Sam’s in England. This causes the film to open up to other characters, but Firth and Tucci are the stars of the show from the beginning to the end of the movie. As a result, an unforgettable central scene occurs in which Tusker is supposed to read a speech at a dinner but, due to his condition, is unable to do so. As an alternative, Sam reads the words his lover has written, many of which are about him, in his place. Tusker’s feelings for Sam are communicated to him by Sam. During this scene, Tucci performs some of his most memorable work of his long and distinguished career, conveying his pride in what he’s written about Sam—in many ways, the last time he will be able to express these thoughts about the person who means the most to him—while also laced with the sadness of the moment. Their performances in the film are outstanding, with both of them finding numerous grace notes that elevate a story that could have been melodramatic into something that is truly empathetic and heartfelt. The film is considered to be among the best work done by both actors in their respective careers.

About the quiz

As the emotional climaxes of “Supernova” approached, some of the dialogue struck me as overwritten, with fragments of thoughts and emotions that felt more crafted than organic. However, when I think back on this film, the faces and body language, as well as the quiet moments, come to mind more than the words spoken or the main argument that dominates the film’s conclusion. That proud and yet pained look Tucci gives Firth during that speech will stay with me for a long time. It’s a movie that finds most of its power through silence. If you close your eyes and relax your body while hugging someone, you will feel the effects for a long time. And the issues I had with the script of the film are beginning to fade in my memory. “Supernova” will be remembered for its characters rather than for its technical aspects. And it’s possible that this is ideal for a film about memory. I’d like to believe that the last thing we’ll see are the faces of those we care about. Also, you must try to play this Supernova quiz.
