Given that the “Terminator” franchise is all about traveling to the past and tinkering with the timeline in order to prevent future tragedies from occurring, it makes perfect sense that the latest installment of the franchise would engage in some revisionist history of its own.
“Terminator: Dark Fate” takes place in a world (and IN A WORLD… to borrow a phrase from the late, great trailer narrator Don LaFontaine) in which the previous three Terminator films never even existed, and in which the previous three Terminator films never even existed. “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” picks up where the high-tech game-changer “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” left off in 1991, directed by Tim Miller and based on a script by David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes and Billy Ray. The Terminator films “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” (2003), “Terminator Salvation” (2009), and “Terminator Genisys” (2015) are as if they never happened (2015). It would be wonderful if we could get back that time as well.
This is a brilliant concept, one that was conceived through a combination of ingenuity and pure survival instincts. This was an action franchise of mythological proportions that was on the verge of disintegrating. Just watching it makes you wish the filmmakers had looked into this approach for something other than nonstop action and pointless fan service in the first place. Several images, visual effects, and even dialogue from the previous films are recycled in “Dark Fate,” including lines that have been uttered so many times in so many other pop-culture contexts that they now elicit groans when they are uttered in the context of an actual “Terminator” setting. Sure, it’s great to see Linda Hamilton back in the role that defined her career as Sarah Connor, swaggering and kicking asses in the defining role of her career. Nevertheless, she is now the one who gets to say the hilarious “I’ll be back” and a few other painfully clunky lines, such as the one that follows: “I hunt Terminators.” “And I keep drinking until I pass out.”

During this episode, set in the present day where the machines have not (yet) taken over, a woman appears from the sky in a glowing blue orb, naked but otherwise prepared to complete her mission. Grace (a formidable Mackenzie Davis) is a “augmented” human soldier from the future who has arrived in Mexico City to prevent a seemingly ordinary young woman from being killed. Grace’s mission is to prevent the death of a seemingly ordinary young woman. An unstoppable machine of death is on the prowl for Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes), an upbeat auto factory worker whose mundane life is turned upside down—sometimes literally—when the machine comes after her.

He is the Rev-9 (played by a suitably stoic Gabriel Luna), the most recent Terminator model, and he possesses all of the ferocious fighting skills and morphing abilities of the T-1000, plus some. He can withstand a shotgun blast to the head and recover to full health in a matter of seconds. With a simple flick of the wrist, he can transform his arms into spears, sledgehammers, guns, and whatever other weapons he requires. It’s possible for him to be completely demolished in a single blast, his limbs scattered everywhere, only to have them melt into gooey, black puddles that scurry across the floor, resembling his original shape. (He’s like The Blob, except he’s a lot more evil.) He even has a skeleton that can be detached from his exterior, allowing him to fly a helicopter in the sky while also battling tiny humans on the ground at the same time.
About the quiz
All of these are fantastic ideas, and they represent significant advancements over the digital wizardry that dazzled us nearly three decades ago. The visual effects in “Dark Fate” are consistently the most impressive aspect of the film. The fact is, they’re working in the service of a blockbuster that is unyielding in its single-note intensity. In contrast to the first “Deadpool” film, which featured a far more pleasing balance of action and comedy, this sequel operates at a single, frenetic speed for two hours and forty minutes, and it is exhausting to watch. There is a lot of inventive, acrobatic choreography in the first, big fight scene between Grace and the Rev-9, and Miller and Oscar-nominated editor Julian Clarke were wise to allow large sections of choreography to play out on screen. It becomes repetitive and tedious, however, when the Rev-9 just keeps showing up in the same place, over and over again, with no sign of weakness or vulnerability in between attacks.

However, even when Sarah Connor appears out of nowhere in the middle of an exhausting, heart-pounding car chase to blow stuff up and then walk away without looking at it, the sense of anxiety is heightened due to her arsenal in her truck and detached, “been there, done that” demeanor, which adds to the sense of danger. In spite of the fact that Hamilton appears to be as fierce as ever, she is stuck explaining things to her female coworkers through inane expository dialogue that is both haranguing and blasé. As someone who has been Dani before, Sarah understands the young woman’s bewilderment at her sudden sense of importance, and she also understands the paranoia that permeates the group’s every move.
As if having not one but a group of strong female characters at the center of an extreme (and extremely violent) action film, which is a prequel to the apocalypse-prevention franchise, comes along Arnold Schwarzenegger to save the day isn’t enough, he goes out of his way to save the day. Because, theoretically, you couldn’t reboot the franchise without having the original Terminator on hand. After all, he had stated that he would return. However, while discovering where he’s been and what he’s been up to all this time is extremely amusing, his banter with Sarah Connor is less than witty.
Moreover, it’s a little depressing to discover that the film has put these badass ladies in the position of needing rescue from a man—even if that man is an android—when they were doing just fine on their own, thank you very much.
