One of the most difficult tasks for a filmmaker is to take a story in which everyone already knows the ending (or at the very least ought to know the ending), and then retell the story in such a way that the outcome is once again uncertain. In the fact-based story about the Cold War that was released this year, “Bridge of Spies,” director Steven Spielberg manages to accomplish this, and now, Mexican director Patricia Riggen manages to accomplish something not dissimilar with a fact-based story that is of more recent vintage.
The film “The 33” is a technically impressive simulation of the mine collapse and rescue in Chile in 2010, a catastrophic event that saw 33 miners trapped underground for what seemed like a mind-boggling 69 days. The event took place in Chile. During that time period, their plight was elevated to the status of a global cause, and their incredibly miraculous rescue was a “whole world is watching” moment on par with the first successful landing on the moon. While the English-language production features actors Antonio Banderas and Lou Diamond Phillips, two actors with obvious Latino bonafides in several departments, in key leading roles, the film also has French actor Juliette Binoche and Irish actor Gabriel Byrne in prominent parts, both playing Chileans. This international cast may, at first glance, strike the movie-savvy viewer as improbable as well. It is a testament to director Riggen’s skill with actors that she is able to make the ensemble work together as if it were a single entity. There shouldn’t be a problem as long as your objections to casting against conventional type don’t involve any kind of physical violence.

In the beginning of the film, there is a scene that takes place at a party, and during this scene, the main characters are introduced. One is an experienced miner who has asked his friend and foreman for an extra shift on a day that he was supposed to have off; another is a younger miner who is about to become a father and who is considering leaving the mining business as a result; and the third is an elderly miner who is retiring. When a chunk of rock with a mass equivalent to two Empire State Buildings traps them almost 2,000 feet underground, with only three days’ worth of food and water rations in the refuge area where the miners roost, all three of these cases, of course, add to the “what incredible irony” quotient.

After the disaster has occurred, the movie starts to get tense and claustrophobic. This is when it really starts to get good. The narrative jumps back and forth between the mine and the outside world. Below, the miners take stock of their circumstances and evaluate the degree to which they are truly in a desperate situation. Above, the families of the miners demand answers and action. These families include Maria, played by Juliette Binoche, the guilt-ridden sister of a drunken miner, a wife who is pregnant, and the competing wife and mistress of one worker who is sheepishly rakish. The Chilean government, portrayed by Rodrigo Santoro (“Che,” “300”) as a green and earnest minister, steps in; Gabriel Byrne’s tough mining engineer thinks the miners are all but dead ducks, and his interactions with Santoro’s character do a good job of explaining just why the chances for a rescue were initially somewhere in the neighborhood of one percent.

The action that followed demonstrates how the odds got better. Riggen doesn’t mind having to do sketches because there are a lot of characterizations and a few character arcs that the movie takes on; a more thorough movie would have been, well, a mini-series. But the fact that she maintains the continuity of the action throughout is an impressive feat, and there are times when she demonstrates admirable bravery. The prospect of the miners starving to death provides the impetus for a hallucination dinner scene that is both incredibly bold and hilarious in its own right. The performances of Antonio Banderas and Lou Diamond Phillips serve as the film’s bedrock; Banderas is unfailingly charismatic as he typically is, and Phillips demonstrates once again how nuanced and powerful an actor he can be. This unabashedly audience-pleasing movie maintains its integrity all the way through to its uplifting but also somewhat unsettling conclusion and coda (which, as is the custom these days, introduces the audience to the real-life miners). As a result, it comes as a pleasantly surprising development, and in more ways than one.
