It’s likely that the documentary “The Biggest Little Farm” will make you happy if you grew up reading storybooks about small family farms stocked with ducks, pigs, lambs, and loyal sheepdogs, and you’ve always wanted to see one for yourself. But it is only after the Chesters have settled in and realized just how many moving parts there are on even a small farm that the film begins to feel more grounded and transparent. Every day, the farmers are tasked with finding solutions to urgent and everyday problems such as how to prevent snails from infesting their lemon trees, how to prevent coyotes from killing their ducks without having to kill the coyotes themselves, and how to raise an orphaned lamb to adulthood without having to put it down prematurely. The most fascinating aspect of “The Biggest Little Farm” is the story of people who realized they had achieved their dream only to discover that keeping it alive is difficult and often heartbreaking work.
