It is abundantly clear that the writer and performer Sacha Baron Cohen does not give any credence to the notion that an explorer might one day discover that there are no more new worlds to conquer. Throughout the course of his career, he has experimented with and worn out a number of personae, including more than a couple that were created with the intention of duping famous and gullible people. In his most recent work, “The Brothers Grimsby,” he continues in this vein of writing. The premise of the film seems to be a send-up of tech-crazy conspiracy-driven spy movies, and that is exactly what the film is. At least, that is how it appears to audiences in the United States. Grimsby is not the surname of the brothers played by Mark Strong and Sacha Baron Cohen; rather, it is the real name of a real British town, a no longer-booming seaport that has been named the worst place to live in England by more than one publication. However, it is also a merciless lampoon of certain types in the contemporary British working class; “Grimsby” isn’t the surname of the brothers played by Strong and Cohen; rather, it is the real name of The first scene in the film depicts Sacha Baron Cohen’s character, Nobby, engaging in sexual activity with his sex partner while listening to R. Kelly’s song “Bump and Grind.” A cutaway reveals that the action took place in a mattress store, and the subsequent shots show Nobby carrying the mattress onto a bus. This is one of the more subtle comedic moments in the movie. It just so happens that Nobby, a man who is passionate about football and who is also responsible for the upbringing of more than one child, has a younger brother whom he pines for so much that he has maintained his childhood bedroom. That brother is the character Sebastian, played by Strong, who has since become a well-equipped undercover agent working for British intelligence. Nobby stumbles upon his brother’s whereabouts and messes up a mission, which results in the actor Daniel Radcliffe becoming infected with HIV as a direct result of his actions. It’s a tricky situation. Once they are brought back together, the brothers are required to work together in order to stop a more widespread epidemic from spreading throughout the world.

Am I currently describing the plot of the story? I am, but I am unsure of the reason why. The plot of “The Brothers Grimsby,” much like the majority of the other aspects of the film, is both laboriously drawn out and not very well developed. It is one of those movies that doesn’t even come close to being a movie; the scenes don’t follow any discernible logic, the action is incoherent when it’s not deliberately inane, and so on and so forth. (The director is Louis Leterrier, best known for his work on the film “Now You See Me.” Leterrier was presumably brought on board to give the proceedings a sheen of the action genre, but he does not really accomplish this goal.) The scenario exists almost entirely to facilitate the set pieces, which are tremendously invested in elevating the stakes for the purpose of gross-out humor. Again, a small firework that can be seen sticking out of Nobby’s butt in an early scene in the movie is the source material for one of the film’s funniest and most sophisticated jokes. Later on, there is a riff on the “suck out the poison” bit from Woody Allen’s “Bananas,” updated and firmly planted into the world of that sexual practice introduced to moviegoers of the cult persuasion by John Waters’ “Pecker.” The majority of the grotesque humor in this article is reminiscent of Waters’ work. It is as if the ethos of “Pink Flamingos” was filtered through a bad trip on crystal meth, with a significant amount of money being thrown after it in the form of visual effects. It’s interesting to see that this kind of stuff, which used to be relatively unspeakable in the nicer homes of America, has entered the mainstream of entertainment, but frankly, it’s a little bit disheartening as well. During their escape from would-be killers in Africa, Nobby and Sebastian come across a herd of elephants moving across a plain. The elephants are on their way to a new home. Where could they possibly conceal themselves among all of these wild animals? To my great embarrassment, I was able to correctly guess with relatively little effort. Ew.

Even more disheartening was seeing Gabourey Sidibe submit to being used as a sight gag in a scene that came right before the one with the elephants. The fact that the star of “Precious” has a raucous sense of humor about herself is certainly admirable and deserving of praise. And it’s also true that none of the other performers here escape the movie with their dignity intact, with the possible exception of Ian McShane, Penelope Cruz, and Baron Cohen’s wife Isla Fisher (the movie has a large and diverse cast, which also includes Rebel Wilson, and you’d never guess what kind of character she plays). However, there is a whiff of opportunity about the way that Sidibe is being utilized in this context.

Is there not even a single funny moment in the movie? No. I found myself chuckling appreciatively, but not at the gross-out humor, but rather at some of the characters’ dry reactions after their ordeals involving body functions. The scene in which Nobby discovers how much “fun” it can be to use a gun is gruesome but will make you laugh out loud, and the movie is peppered with sly humor that makes pointed observations about social norms in its margins. However, as a full movie experience, this did not leave me with a consistently enjoyable feeling of having my jaw dropped. The joke about Donald Trump in the movie isn’t very funny, either. Sad!
