Armando Iannucci, the writer/director, has never let his sense of humour get in the way of a good laugh, no matter how bitter. The work for which he is best known in the United States is the HBO comedy “Veep,” which gets a lot of mileage out of portraying American politicians as not only bumbling and venal, but as actively, crassly awful as possible. This novel’s central character, Selina Meyer, is plagued by a relentless sense of self-interest that seeps into every aspect of her being like an especially aggressive poison ivy. In part, this is due to the fact that she is shocking—shocking in ways that you don’t want to believe a human being can be.

As a result, portraying one of the greatest monsters of the twentieth century, the brutal dictator Stalin of the Soviet Union, makes sense for an artist of Iannucci’s caliber. First and foremost, there is the challenge. Then there’s the fact that some people will say he’s gone too far in his actions. Which, in turn, raises another question: while all of the politicians depicted on “Veep” have blood on their hands, Stalin was a mass murderer of a different caliber than the others. Can someone tell me how many people you’ve killed before it becomes sacrilege to mock you? Is there a number that can be used to determine this?

As far as this film is concerned, the question is moot, or at the very least half-moot, because “The Death of Stalin” is about exactly that: the power grab by Soviet apparatchiks in the immediate aftermath of Stalin’s death from natural causes. At first glance, the film, which was written by Iannucci with David Schneider, Ian Martin, and Peter Fellows, resembles the graphic novel on which it is based, which was written by Fabien Nury and Thierry Robin and directed by Thierry Robin.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this The Death Of Stalin quiz.

The film begins with a disaster of epic proportions. On a Mozart program broadcast on Radio Moscow one evening, the pianist Maria Yudina and her orchestra do a fantastic job. So much so that Stalin calls in and requests that a recording of the conversation be sent to his dacha. One issue was that Radio Moscow was not recording. There is a panic, and there is only one solution: re-stage the concert and record it again. Maria, who has lost a relative as a result of Dear Leader’s actions, will not comply until she has been sufficiently bribed. In mortal fear, the conductor walks away from the stage: what if his work on the re-creation isn’t up to par? The work is eventually completed, an acetate is prepared, and a poison pen note is slipped into the sleeve by the protagonist. Stalin… falls to his death as he reads it.

As a result, Beria (Simon Russell Beale), accompanied by hapless CP Central Committee bigwig Malenkov (Jeffrey Tambor), assumes command of the situation, with Beria discovering and pocketing the note in his possession. As other members of the Central Committee arrive, including Nikita Khrushchev (Steve Buscemi), there is a scramble for position that extends to the order in which all of their limousines depart from the dacha. As funeral arrangements are finalized and Stalin’s children must be dealt with, the plotting and backstabbing become more elaborate.

Prior Iannucci works, including the television series “The Thick of It” and “Veep,” as well as the film “In The Loop,” depicted Western politicians using armies and drones to kill for them. When it comes to pulling a pistol and shooting someone in the head, the figures depicted in this painting have no qualms about it. In a long game of power extortion, they’ll kidnap and imprison someone’s wife in order to gain control of the situation. And so forth. Is it true that their murderousness makes them less amusing?

About the quiz

Clearly, Iannucci is not attempting to recreate his signature style of comedy in its entirety in this film. No doubt about it, “The Death of Stalin” is a morbid farce, but it’s a mordant farce. Despite the fact that it never asks us to laugh at cruelty, it does so by making us laugh at the absurd pettiness and ultimate small-mindedness of the men who commit the cruelty. And Iannucci is a fantastic ringmaster, as well.

Iannucci has each of the cast members speak in the manner in which they are accustomed to doing so, from Simon Russell Beale’s high-end London tones to Steve Buscemi’s Brooklynese. This avoids the banal and flat-footed conventions of verisimilitude. According to me, the effect is the creation of a stand-alone reality, and it is effective. Listen to the clumsy Boris and Natasha “Russian” accents that are thrown around in “Red Sparrow” as a point of comparison, and then get back to me. This method allows the virtuoso cast to have as much fun with each other as possible in the most rapid and seemingly spontaneous manner possible. You develop an emotional attachment to the characters that transcends their accents.

What’s more, despite the horrendous murderous action he takes in his attempt to seize power, Iannucci paints a moderately sympathetic portrait of Khrushchev, which is quite provocative. He brings Khrushchev’s sincere desire for reform to the forefront of the graphic novel by expanding on his character’s appearance in the book. The point Iannucci is making by doing so is one that is uncomfortably uncomfortable. However, this is a film that seeks to make you uncomfortable in a variety of ways. Even when you’re laughing, which you will be, it’s important to remember that.
