“The Dry,” the film adaptation of Jane Harper’s 2016 international bestseller of the same name, opens with aerial shots of the parched land in Kiewarra, a farming community located outside of Melbourne, as the title suggests. However, the arid expanse below, with its lifeless stretches of dried brown fields, makes it clear that farming is not taking place there. These shots are repeated throughout Robert Connolly’s film “The Dry,” which establishes the film in a very specific world and at a very specific time in history. Although this is a “whodunit,” the atmosphere is anything but generic, and the intense heat is felt in every scene, where the fields and tinder-box trees appear stunted and almost terrified. For the community that has huddled together in the midst of “the dry,” the same holds true. They are all trapped in space and time, not only because of the drought, but also because of two crimes that took place decades apart and which threaten to set the entire place on fire.

Aaron Falk (Eric Bana), a city detective who grew up in Kiewarra, returns to the town for the funeral of Luke Hadler, a childhood friend of his. This is not your typical funeral: it is a joyous celebration of life. Luke fatally shot his wife Karen and their young son before turning the gun on himself. Upon Aaron’s return to town, memories of a scandal from two decades prior resurface: the drowning of a teen girl named Ellie, who died under mysterious circumstances, circumstances that implicated both Luke and Aaron, resurface. Both boys were considered suspects in her death, and they lied to police in order to conceal their identities. Aaron’s family was forced to flee town as a result of the scandal, and they never returned. Aaron returns to a community that is suffering as a result of the drought, and he is still enraged over what happened several years ago in the community.

Aaron’s return is met with hostility by the majority of the town’s residents, particularly Ellie’s father (William Zappa), who accuses Aaron of being responsible for her death. Although Luke’s parents believe their son could never have done such a thing, they persuade Aaron to stay on to look into the closed case because they believe there may have been foul play. Aaron decides to stay despite his better judgment, despite his feelings of guilt and ambivalence. He teams up with Greg Raco, a local police sergeant (Keir O’Donnell), who has been traumatized by the bodies he has discovered and is inexperienced in the investigation of violent crimes due to his trauma. Greg, on the other hand, is a good cop who has a strong feeling that something was very “off” about the crime scene.

Exciting flashbacks, presented in subjective fragments, are interspersed throughout the film, interfering with the main character Aaron’s present-day investigation. Editors Nick Meyers and Alexandre de Franceschi have done an artful and sensitive job creating a collage of the activities of a group of four friends—Ellie (BeBe Bettencourt), Luke (Sam Corlett), Gretchen (Claude Scott-Mitchell), and Aaron (Joe Klocek)—prior to Ellie’s death. The film is directed by Nick Meyers and Alexandre de Franceschi, who also edited the film. The flashbacks never reveal too much information, revealing their truths slowly and inadvertently, sometimes jumping backwards or forwards in time, as they do in the present. The audience is cast in the role of detective, with the task of deciphering the information given to them. Despite the fact that Luke appears to be pursuing Ellie (albeit in a rough-house manner), Aaron appears to have a silent crush on her. Gretchen is a mostly passive observer who observes everything. Bana’s gloomy and troubled demeanor reveals how haunted he is by his younger self, his younger friends, and the beautiful, laughing doomed Ellie, who appears at every turn.

In tandem with the progression of “The Dry,” these flashbacks become more frequent, bringing us steadily closer to Ellie’s drowning. As seen through the lens of the present-day, where Aaron’s suspicions remain unabated, these flashbacks cast doubt on everything not only he says, but also everything everyone else says. Aaron re-unites with Gretchen (Genevieve O’Reilly), with whom he shares memories of Luke and Ellie, as well as their own. Nobody seems to know what triggered Luke’s rage or why he would choose to kill his family.

The movie “The Dry” is full of memorable characters, including the small-town doctor (played by Daniel Fredriksen), the overworked grade school principal (John Polson), and the taciturn farmer (James Frecheville) who lives with his grandmother. All of these people have secrets, but it is unclear whether or not the secrets have anything to do with the crime. Aaron will have to wade through all of this. Watching this outstanding cast in action is a big part of the enjoyment of “The Dry.”

About the quiz

The cinematographer, Stefan Duscio, provides us with expansive wide shots of the drought-parched land, with smoke billowing up in the distance from wildfires, or dust devils spiraling their way across dried fields, cars barreling towards town leaving huge dusty trails in their wake, all of which creates an eerie sense of isolation and struggle. “The Dry” never allows you to forget where you are or what you’re doing. In the scene where Aaron returns to the river where Ellie drowned, this is most clearly demonstrated.. It’s just that the river has dried up, leaving only a cavern cutting through the dirt as a result.

Bana does a fantastic job of balancing the confidence of a “big city” cop with the anxiety of a man struggling with his dark past in this film. Regardless of whether he is guilty or not in relation to Ellie’s death — and the film is a “whodunit” that takes place on two different tracks — he feels he is unable to proclaim his innocence. Although Bana’s face and posture betray a deep sense of sadness and guilt, there is also the competence and shrewdness of a police officer on the lookout for suspicious behavior and inconsistencies to balance things out. It’s a very effective and emotional performance, albeit in a quiet and reserved manner.

Though there is criticism of corporate farming’s destruction of rural communities, it is not emphasized as a plot point or presented in the form of an overt “message.” In addition, the general sense of helplessness in the face of forces far greater than one’s own is woven into the fabric of the environment. It characterizes the fabric of these people’s existences. “The Dry” accomplishes a great deal, and it does so admirably.

The film is playing in select theaters and is also available on digital platforms.
