She finds a worthy sparring partner for her cutting wit in her history teacher, Mr. Bruner (a wonderfully understated Woody Harrelson), who can dish it out just as well as he can take it and appears unfazed by her disobedience. Her other unlikely ally is the kind and bright Erwin (played by Hayden Szeto), a fellow student who may be a bit awkward but is fundamentally honorable and who has a crush on her that is not exactly a well-kept secret. Because Craig was willing to defy expectations about the types of students who attend high school, Szeto was able to benefit greatly from this. Szeto is adorable and charismatic. And by writing an Asian character who turns out to be both a hero and a heartthrob by the end of the film, Craig rectifies some of the mistakes that the late John Hughes made, particularly when it came to stereotypical portrayals of various ethnic groups. When Nadine’s best friend has a one-night stand with her brother after a particularly rowdy drinking session and then begins a serious relationship with him, her entire world, which was already precarious, comes crashing down around her. In a similar vein, a significant portion of what contributes to Nadine’s allure is the fact that she is not always pleasant. She is able to laugh at herself for her many mistakes, but her default mode is misanthropy, and she does not put up with fools well.
