What is “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and how does it work? Micheal Showalter directs this adaptation of the documentary of the same name, which was released in 2000 and successfully reshaped the legacy of a woman who was often derided for her reliance on make-up and accused of defrauding her devoted fans. That film, on the other hand, exists. Why is it being remade as a glitzy dramedy? This is a question that I’m not sure has ever been asked before. It’s best appreciated as a performance piece from an actress who goes all-in, but everything else in the film feels underdeveloped in comparison to that whirlwind of an acting turn. Like someone decided that “Jessica Chastain plays Tammy Faye” was all that needed to be considered, and the rest of the movie would just write and direct itself as a result of that decision. It doesn’t work like that. And with each passing scene, the feeling that there isn’t enough meat on the bones of this film grows stronger and stronger, until it becomes clear that no one was really interested in delving into what this true story has to say about faith, acceptance, and resilience. They were too preoccupied with applying makeup and dressing in ostentatious costumes to care.

She immerses herself in the life of Tammy Faye Bakker, the infamous wife of the king of televangelism, Jim Bakker, in this film (Andrew Garfield). Tammy Faye’s life is told through a traditional biopic structure, beginning with her childhood fascination with religion and progressing to her courtship with a young Jim. She is outspoken and strident as Tammy Faye in Showalter’s film, daring to sit at a table with the men who are advising her husband on his growing career, much to the displeasure of conservatives such as Jerry Falwell (a glowering Vincent D’Onofrio). Tammy Faye is portrayed by Showalter and Chastain as a pure soul who believes in all of her causes despite the fact that she is surrounded by inferior men who attempt to dim her inner brightness on a consistent basis.

No one really cares whether or not this is true in this case. The positive side of Tammy Faye is fine with me, especially given her progressive beliefs about acceptance and homosexuality. Showalter recreates the famous interview with Steve Pieters that recognized the existence of AIDS at a time when no one in Tammy Faye’s profession was willing to do so, and the scene has undeniable emotional power. Throughout the film, Chastain portrays her as a never-ending firecracker, someone who people like Jim and Jerry knew how to manipulate in order to reach a financially motivated fan base but who they couldn’t really comprehend. She was pure in heart and mind. When Chastain says, “I just want to love people,” she is expressing her sincere belief in her statement.

Tammy Faye Bakker’s image rehabilitation, on the other hand, only goes so far in terms of dramatic impact, and it would have been better served in a more complex and ambitious film. Consider a film like “I, Tonya,” which, like this one, rehabilitates a very public figure but does so with a wit and passion that are lacking in this production. In order to tell its story, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” relies far too heavily on make-up and costumes, splicing together montages of “Prime Tammy Faye” like a highlight reel from a Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony. Nothing has any depth or dramatic purpose, which is exacerbated by the fact that Bakker is played by a very thin actor. Even though Garfield is a tremendously talented actor, writer Abe Sylvia never takes the time to get under Bakker’s skin. Was he a charlatan or a purist, and how did you know? Despite the fact that he is clearly a weak man, he also serves as a blank slate in this film, serving as the straight man to Tammy Faye’s passion, and he comes across as underwritten.

The Eyes Of Tammy Faye Quiz

This is, without a doubt, the Tammy Faye story, and fans of both her and Chastain will overlook the flaws in a film about a woman who wished to transmit God’s love to the world through her. However, the majority of those individuals are familiar with Tammy Faye from the documentary and are aware that Chastain is capable of performing miracles when given the right material. “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” is a performance piece that connects with the audience. Is this, however, sufficient? What is the point of hearing this story again? Tammy Faye Bakker yearned for acceptance, both as a recipient and as a giver, and Showalter’s film serves as a powerful reminder of how much we must value acceptance in our lives. I just wish the lesson came in a film that felt like it was truly concerned with understanding her on a deeper level or opening the eyes of those who have been closed for far too long, rather than simply preaching to the choir as it did here.
