In the film “The Gift,” which was written and directed by actor Joel Edgerton, the protagonist, Simon (Jason Bateman), and his wife, Rebecca Hall, are forced to attend an uncomfortable reunion dinner with a man named Gordon, whom Simon knew in high school (nicknamed “Gordo”, played by Edgerton). After everything is said and done, Simon turns to his wife and asks, “Did he strike you as being odd?” Actually, yes. He did. And he gets odder. The peculiarity is difficult to put into words. Is it the uninterested expression in his eyes? Is it the mystery surrounding why he keeps showing up, why he leaves wrapped gifts at the door, and why he even wants to strike up a friendship with Simon in the first place, when Simon seems to barely remember the guy? What exactly is Gordo doing now? What is he looking for? The fact that the answers to those questions are only the tip of the iceberg is one of the things that makes “The Gift” so intense and unsettling, as well as one of the reasons why the movie generates such a sense of unease.
The script that Edgerton wrote is very powerful because he is interested in what happens to a supposedly happy couple after a third party injects uncertainty, insecurity, and second thoughts into the marriage. Edgerton’s interest in this topic makes his script very powerful. It’s as if an invisible poison was released into the atmosphere, and its effects on people are both unpredictable and terrifying. “The Gift” is comparable to “Cape Fear,” “Fatal Attraction,” and “The Night of the Hunter” in that it depicts an individual or group from outside the family unit posing a threat to the domestic sphere (usually an individual with an ax to grind). The suspenseful film “The Gift” features a good number of jump scares, but the primary source of terror in the story is psychological. The very existence of the marriage is in jeopardy. However, why? What exactly is being divulged? What kind of a mystery lies within the past? Is there even a shred of a secret left?
The reason that Simon and Robyn uprooted their lives and moved from Chicago to California is that Simon was offered a prestigious corporate job with a security systems company. Robyn is a freelance designer, but there is an underlying sense that she is unhappy with her life in some unspoken way. They are making efforts to begin a family. Simon wants his wife to find joy in whatever it is that she decides to do with her life. They purchase a stunning home that has expansive glass windows that look out onto the lush vegetation in the neighborhood.

The first scene begins with Gordo walking up to the couple as they are out shopping for housewares. He then re-introduces himself to Simon. You just can’t quite put your finger on what it is about Gordo’s method that makes it so intense, but you know it’s there. It’s possible that he’s just awkward in social situations. Robyn, whom her husband refers to as the type of person whose “door is always half open,” expresses her excitement at the prospect of meeting someone from her husband’s past. However, Gordo becomes a problem pretty quickly after that. During the time that Simon is at work and Robyn is home alone, he comes to visit unexpectedly. He will sometimes leave a note with a gift at the front door, and the note will always end with a smiley face. He is pushy in a way that is quiet and clueless. Simon has made it clear that he wants to get rid of Gordo for good. Robyn has the impression that there was some sort of interaction between these two individuals in the past. She does not have a complete understanding of the situation.

The fact that a series of nicely wrapped gifts that are left on the front stoop seem increasingly ominous is a testament to the film’s visual style. Eduard Grau, the cinematographer, takes his time with the house by moving the camera slowly down empty hallways (the shots are repeated), with the rooms at the end of the hallways remaining unseen and in the shadows. Robyn is seen taking a shower with her exposed back visible through the glass. While Robyn and Simon are conversing in the kitchen, the nighttime darkness outside the windows gives the impression that they are being watched. These are techniques that are frequently used in thrillers, and the reason they are considered “common” is because they are effective. The audience will have a preconceived notion of the kind of suspense film they are about to see as a result of the stylistic choices that have been made. Even a much-loved animal vanishes under mysterious circumstances, bringing to mind the boiling bunny from “Fatal Attraction.” Is it possible that Gordo took their dog? In spite of the fact that Jason Bateman is best known for his comedic roles, he delivers a stunning and intense performance as the ambitious Simon, who is both concerned about his wife and angry at Gordo’s constant presence. Bateman is capable of being kind and condescending at the same time, sometimes even in the same sentence. Simon has a short fuse, he has trouble being patient, he is funny and considerate, but Simon has a temper. Robyn is exposed to sides of Gordo’s personality that she had never seen before as a result of the dynamic she shares with him. Rebecca Hall’s performance is honest and empathetic, suggesting that she has suffered in the past and that she has made significant efforts to overcome this suffering. It is the proper course of action to treat Gordo with kindness and patience. However, Simon is correct in his assessment that Gordo seems “odd,” and Robyn comes across as naive and overly trusting. You have it in your head to recommend to her that she check out “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin de Becker. And despite the fact that he is wearing three different hats in “The Gift,” those of writer, director, and actor, Edgerton dials down any impulse to act in an overtly menacing or villainous manner. He is terrifying, but once again, in a manner that defies easy categorization.
