A movie directed by Nancy Meyers has an effect on viewers that is very calming. Everything looks so good; polished yet homey at the same time. It’s not just the real estate porn, which was on full display in the ageism-challenging romantic comedy directed by Nancy Meyers in 2003 called “Something’s Gotta Give” and featured a beach house in the Hamptons. It’s also the furniture, like the rotating tie rack that can be found in the bedroom of the brownstone that Robert De Niro’s character, a retired businessman, owns in her most recent film, “The Intern.” The film “The Intern” was shot at locations mostly within walking distance of where I actually live, and while it is a very blessed part of Brooklyn, its windows are not normally quite as uniformly shiny as those of the buildings seen here. The reason for this can be seen in the way that all of the surfaces gleam.

And this calming quality often serves as a distraction from how pointless and unsettling a movie like “Something’s Gotta Give” can be at times. But here’s the thing: “The Intern,” despite having its fair share of goofy moments, is the most genuinely enjoyable and likeable movie that Meyers, who was a longtime writer and producer before taking up directing, has put her name to since, oh, I don’t know, 1984’s “Irreconcilable Differences.”

Editor’s Picks

As he did in the films “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” and even “The King of Comedy,” Robert De Niro plays the lead role in this one. Ben Whittaker is his character’s name, and he’s a retired, wealthy widower living in Brooklyn who’s bored with the relative inactivity of his current, pleasant mode of living despite the fact that it’s quite pleasant. So he applies for a position in a “Senior Intern Program” at an e-commerce concern called “About The Fit,” and winds up reporting to its founder, Jules, an exemplary, for Meyers, 21st Century entrepreneur type. Not too far beneath her sunny exterior — she IS played by Anne Hathaway, after all — is a highly driven and possibly blinkered go-getter.

The role that Robert De Niro plays in this film is one that the actor pretty much never took on during what many people consider to be the peak of his acting career. He plays a regular guy who has succeeded in life and is decent, straightforward, and not neurotic. And he does a pretty good job of playing the role in this movie. His opening scene, in which he creates a video application for a job, has a touch of the Woody Allen vibe about it. When he interacts with younger coworkers and gains knowledge about the Weird Things These Kids Today Do With Their Relationships And The Internet and Other Such Things, his job requires him to engage in a certain amount of mugging. This is because his role requires him to. One of the strengths of De Niro’s character is that he is aware, knowledgeable, and eager to be of assistance. Thankfully, the film does not spend an excessive amount of time focusing on the confusion that senior citizens feel when confronted with the Digital Age. It is difficult for him to be of assistance to Jules because of her unrelenting concentration, which causes her to be immediately suspicious of anyone who has an understanding of how she conceives of and operates her company. And the movie does a pretty good job of covering the specifics of that industry and the way that Jules’ vision for it defines the particulars of how it operates in the real world.

However, Ben is able to get into Jules’ good graces in part by using patriarchal stealth. One example of this is when he confronts Jules’ driver after seeing him take a few nips out of a paper bag right before the soon-to-be-former employee is supposed to take Jules to a meeting in Manhattan. Ben then confronts the soon-to-be-former employee. Ben’s internship happens to coincide with a challenging period in the growth of Jules’ company; Jules’ aide-de-camp Cameron (a very understated Andrew Rannells) brings her the unusual news that the company’s investors, while delighted with the success of the company, would like to bring an outside CEO to the company. Ben’s internship coincides with this challenging period in the growth of Jules’ company. Even though it makes her feel dizzy, Jules continues to conduct interviews with potential candidates despite the fact that she is preoccupied with the possibility that she could be replaced in her own company. In the meantime, her home life is taking the standard hits that are associated with the question of whether or not a career woman can have it all. She has a husband (Anders Holm) who is too mild-mannered to be a bro-dad, and she has a young daughter (JoJo Kushner) who is predictably delightful and adorable. And at least one hit that deviates from the norm, or perhaps I should say that it is not so simple to tolerate.

Throughout all of this, Ben keeps a careful and empathetic watch; early on in their relationship, Jules identifies her discomfort with him as stemming from the fact that he is too “observant.” When Ben does step in to offer assistance, he does so in a discretely chivalrous manner, which actually runs counter to any expectations that “here comes daddy to save the day.” When Ben does bring his experience as a businessman to bear on Jules’ own enterprise, he does so in the spirit of sharing knowledge rather than that of correcting Jules’ mistakes. This is due to the fact that Ben sincerely admires Jules; you could even say that he looks up to her. When the going gets rough, Ben reassures Jules that the best course of action is to show some grit and go after the things that are important to you.

About the quiz

The teachings of “The Intern” are presented in the form of a comedy that, for the most part, is sane, sweet, and smart, and that, a lot of the time, actually delivers on the promise of being funny. There are two visual jokes that will make you groan, and one of them involves a budding romance between Ben and the in-house masseuse at the company (Rene Russo). But a silly set piece in which Ben enlists some of the younger goofballs of About the Fit on a housebreaking mission, complete with references to more modern versions of “Ocean’s Eleven,” is actually a passable bit of rompage. And every single person in the cast, including Hathaway, who, for the record, I have never disliked in any capacity, is very appealing. My wife’s question to me the other night when I came home and told her I’d had a genuinely enjoyable time watching a movie directed by Nancy Meyers was, “What have you done with my husband?” Where do I even begin? It’s never too late to learn something new and keep an open mind. Also, you must try to play this The Intern quiz.
