The fact of the matter is that no sequel will ever be able to match the ingenuity and contagious energy of “The LEGO Movie.” The visual and narrative ambitions of the 2014 animated extravaganza were far exceeded by the final product. It was jam-packed with big ideas as well as minute details. It made you laugh and cry at the same time. I’ll put it this way: it was incredible.
“The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part” comes out five years after the first film, with a couple of spin-offs in between. It’s entertaining, but it’s not as consistently clever or exciting as its predecessor. Every element is in place: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind the original film, are back as screenwriters this time around, and Mike Mitchell (“Shrek Ever After,” “Trolls”) has taken over directing duties from Peter Jackson. There are more wildly entertaining and insanely catchy songs available now than ever before, including the aptly titled “Catchy Song,” which will undoubtedly become stuck in your head. And the majority of the animated voice cast from the first film has returned, led by Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, and Alison Brie, as well as some welcome newcomers, most notably Tiffany Haddish, who steals the show in the film’s opening sequence.
But there’s something missing here—a critical piece, if you will—that prevents the whole thing from coming together. Perhaps there is a lack of novelty, plain and simple. Fundamentally, the revelation made at the conclusion of the first “LEGO Movie”—that the entire story was the manifestation of a young boy’s imagination in his basement—is a given from the outset of this sequel. Those final twists were downright profound at the time they occurred. Unlike the previous film, we know right away that certain LEGO creations are the work of that slightly older boy, Finn (again played by Jadon Sand), and that others are the work of his annoying little sister (“The Florida Project” star Brooklynn Prince), which makes for an interesting dynamic. The conflict between them is depicted in animated form, but glimpses of live-action reality are interspersed throughout the film.

The film’s startling depiction of what has happened in the five years since we last visited Bricksburg, the sunny, colorful place where industrious everyman Emmet (Pratt), rebellious Lucy/Wyldstyle (Banks), hyperactive Unikitty (Brie), and the rest of the characters called home quickly captures the audience’s attention. This dystopian wasteland, now known as Apocalypseburg, has literally devolved into a dystopian wasteland, with an intentional wink and nod to the bleak look and feel of “Mad Max: Fury Road.” In the same way that the first “LEGO Movie” was entertaining, a lot of the enjoyment here comes from catching all of the fast and furious pop culture references. For example, Arnett’s LEGO Batman is the subject of an entire hilarious song that delves into the many different cinematic incarnations of the Caped Crusader over the years. As previously stated, you will not be able to catch all of the meta-jokes in a single viewing, but you will not be bothered by repeated viewings either.)

Emmet, on the other hand, retains his upbeat and optimistic demeanor. In an adorable display of futility, attempts to be edgy and moody in order to impress the badass Lucy fail miserably. However, when Apocalypseburg is the target of an invasion by what appear to be benign but are actually evil LEGO Duplo creatures from outer space, he gets a real chance to prove himself. This group of shiny, squeaky characters was first introduced at the very end of the first “LEGO Movie.” As the action shifts to a glittery, rainbow-hued locale known as the Systar System, it’s clear what these larger, simpler blocks represent in the real world; the challenge is coming up with innovative ways to reflect that sibling rivalry in an inspired, animated manner.

The dialogue is mostly quick-paced, but Mitchell’s overall pacing drags at times, and the adventures have a repetitive feel to them. And some of the pieces simply do not fall into place, such as the scene involving a LEGO banana that keeps tripping over its own peeling. It’s not particularly amusing the first time you see it, let alone several times. Another source of big, consistent laughs comes from the movie’s self-aware jokes, which include an extended riff on Pratt’s various other blockbuster performances in the form of a swaggering character named Rex Dangervest, which, like Arnett’s Batman song, can be found throughout the film. In particular, Rex’s army of velociraptors, who communicate through subtitles, is exhilarating to watch.

A feminist streak is also present in the film, which is a welcome addition given the tendency for big-studio franchises like this to place a strong emphasis on the heroism of their male characters. One of the most biting exchanges in “The LEGO Movie 2” occurs when Lucy acknowledges that she was the one who did all of the real work in the first film, while Emmet received all of the attention as “The Special.” The Duplo Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi, played by Haddish, is a shapeshifting villain who seeks to defy conventions about what villains should look like and what they should seek.
While these pleasures and insights may not be as overwhelming as they were the first time around, the songs continue to be a complete delight. “The LEGO Movie 2” is actually more of a musical than the first film – which is done consciously, of course – and it saves the best scene for last, as it should. Once again, you’ll want to stick around for the closing credits to hear a joyful and playful song about… the greatness of the closing credits, which will make you want to stay for the whole thing. This genuine expression of appreciation for the hard work that goes into putting everything together is represented by the song “Super Cool,” which features Beck, Robyn, and the Lonely Island guys. Furthermore, it is extremely catchy.
